Prince Harry and Meghan were offered a royal title for Archie but turned it down because they didn’t like how it sounded, according to new reports.
UK newspaper The Telegraph reports that the couple had been offered the title Earl of Dumbarton — a title used previously by Scottish nobility, which draws on the town of the same name.
But the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to have taken issue with the word “dumb” in the title for fears he may have been bullied in the US, where the derogatory term is commonly used.
The Telegraph has cited “multiple sources” in the explosive new claims which contradict those made by the couple in their Oprah Winfrey interview.
“They didn’t like the idea of Archie being called the Earl of Dumbarton because it began with the word 'dumb' [and] they were worried about how that might look,” one source told the publication.
Furious royal watchers have hit back at the claims, calling them disrespectful to the 20,000 people who life in the Scottish town.
“How insulting to the people of Dumbarton,” one wrote on Twitter.
Ironically, Harry himself holds the title Earl of Dumbarton, which was given to him by the Queen on his wedding day. Meghan was appointed Countess of Dumbarton.
The couple opted for their son to instead be known as Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.
In their bombshell Oprah interview in March, Meghan claimed the royal family “didn’t want” Archie to be a prince and, as a result, would not receive taxpayer-funded security through the royal household.
Meghan also created huge waves when she said there were also discussions around Archie’s skin tone before his birth.
“We have in tandem the conversation of: ‘you won't be given security, not going to be given a title’ and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he's born,” she said.
Archie, who is seventh in line to the throne, is not entitled to be an HRH or a prince due to rules set out more than 100 years ago by King George V.
He will be entitled to be an HRH or a prince when the Prince of Wales accedes to the throne.
