Royal author reveals new details on cause of rift between Harry and William - NEWS.com.au

Prince William raged at Meghan Markle’s “merciless” treatment of staff and called her “that bloody woman”, a royal author has said.

The claim is made by Robert Lacey in an explosive new book Battle of Brothers, which details the feud between William and Prince Harry.

It come as the Duke of Sussex, 36, has arrived in the UK for next week’s Princess Diana statue unveiling.

In the book, Lacey writes that conflict between Princess Diana’s “two bitterly divided sons does not seem likely to end any time soon”.

Lacey said that Prince William will have no choice “but to swallow his pride and smile” beside his sister-in-law Meghan on next year’s Platinum Jubilee balcony.

“According to one of my sources, it’s been pointed to him that everyone has a difficult sister-in-law,” he writes in the Daily Mail.

“William’s response was to nod his head in sage acceptance. Then suddenly he broke out angrily. ‘But look at the way that bloody woman treated my staff — merciless!’”

But he also points out that supporters of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex acknowledge how Meghan rubs William up the wrong way.

“Sussex supporters have noted the bizarre combination of self-promotion and self-pity that characterises Meghan, and can see why it has infuriated William.

“’Meghan can be a 500 per cent nightmare’, some close friends of Harry are among the first to admit. ‘The never-ending PR. She’s just so … American!’”

Lacey’s book also details how the Duke of Cambridge was “instantly furious” after discovering a “Dossier of Distress” compiled by Kensington Palace communications chief Jason Knauf.

Lacey claims staff members felt “humiliated” by the Duchess of Sussex, with Harry also allegedly criticised by aides.

One palace courtier recalled in the book: “I overheard a conversation between Harry and one of his top aides. Harry was screaming down the phone.”

Lacey claims in his book that William was “appalled” by allegations and for him it allegedly clarified that “Meghan was fundamentally hostile towards the royal system”.

William is said to have been “instantly furious”, with the claims at odds with his and Kate’s “paternalistic” treatment of their own staff, says the book.

Matters came to a head when Jason Knauf, who worked in communications for both the Cambridges and the Sussexes, submitted an official email in October 2018 alleging Meghan had bullied staff.

Meghan fiercely denies the claims – and a spokesperson for her and Harry said she was the victim of a calculated smear campaign.

When the allegations were first published, the Sussexes’ lawyers said it was “being used by Buckingham Palace to peddle a wholly false narrative”.

“Let’s just call this what it is: a calculated smear campaign based on misleading and harmful misinformation,” a spokesperson for the couple added in a statement.

“The Duchess is saddened by this latest attack on her character, particularly as someone who has been the target of bullying herself and is deeply committed to supporting those who have experienced pain and trauma.

“She is determined to continue her work building compassion around the world and will keep striving to set an example for doing what is right and doing what is good.”

Harry was last in Britain when he flew home to attend the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral in April.

He was seen chatting with William as the brothers walked back from the ceremony at St George’s Chapel and spoke in the Quadrangle after the cameras were switched off.

His father Charles, 72, and Wills, 39, were seen leaving exits near Frogmore Cottage where Harry stayed, two hours after the funeral.

It comes as palace accounts reveal Harry paid five-months’ rent on the cottage and £2.4million last September.
