Audiences of MasterChef Australia were left stunned on Sunday night when one contestant quit the show due to mental health concerns.
Key points:
- Brent Draper left the show citing issues with his mental health
- A visibly upset cast embraced Draper when his decision to leave MasterChef was announced
- On a video posted to social media, the Queensland boilermaker said he was recovering well
Brent Draper, a boilermaker from the Queensland town of Beaudesert, announced before one of the show's cooking challenges that he needed to step away and deal with other issues.
The episode, which was filmed several months ago, took a dramatic turn when Draper told one of the show's judges, Jock Zonfrillo, that he could no longer compete in the popular cooking competition.
"I just need to go home, sort my mental health out," he said.
"It's affecting my cook, my sleep, just everything.
"I don't want to [quit] but I think it's the only thing.
"I think I've come to the point where that's all that's going to help me. Getting home, sorting myself out."

Contestants and judges were visibly upset when Draper's decision to leave the show was announced.
The episode ended with Draper exiting the kitchen, with details for Lifeline appearing before the credits rolled.
After the show aired, Draper posted a video to Instagram to explain why he decided to leave the show and that he was receiving the help he needed.
"It all sort of started [when] my mum got really sick before the filming of MasterChef," he said.
"Then straight into quarantining. Quarantining, it's not fun at all I can tell you. I did it twice.
"Then I had a few health issues over Christmas. Ended up in emergency overnight."
Draper then went into quarantine for the second time and then said while filming MasterChef, his grandmother passed away.
He said he had developed anxiety and did not give it the proper consideration.

He told his followers he was "not dealing with it correctly" and was leading to sleeping issues including panic attacks in the middle of the night.
"My mind just disconnected. I was thinking the worst of the worst," he said.
The video on Instagram did end on a positive note, with Draper telling his followers that he was recovering since leaving the show.
He said he was seeing a doctor and a psychologist, as well as cooking in the kitchen at home with his family.
"It's been a couple of months since that episode … and I'm feeling better," he said.
"The train's back on its tracks."
