Hollywood superstar Chris Hemsworth and Tony Abbott's former chief of staff Peta Credlin are two of the more notable names on this year's Queen's Birthday Honours list.
Five Australians, including South Australian Governor Frances Adamson and ballet star David McAllister, received the highest honour, being appointed as a Companion of the Order of Australia.
But it's likely many people's attention will be grabbed by names further down the list of more than 1000 extraordinary Australians, such as Hemsworth, Ms Credlin and a host of sporting stars such as NRL hall-of-famer Glenn Lazarus, soccer legend Robbie Slater and code-hopping South Australian superstar Erin Phillips.
Ms Credlin, now a Sky News host, was appointed an Officer in the Order of Australia in recognition for distinguished service to parliament and politics, to policy development, and to the executive function of government.
She was one of a record proportion (44 per cent) of women recognised in the General Division of the Order of Australia.
"It is important that the Order of Australia represents the diversity and strength of Australia – for this to happen we need to ensure outstanding women, members of our multicultural community and First Nations people are nominated by their peers in the community," Governor-General David Hurley said.
"I am prioritising increasing awareness of and engagement with the Order of Australia amongst groups that have been historically underrepresented.
"We are seeing positive progress and I am determined that it continues.
Hemsworth, who plays Thor in the Marvel superhero universe, was recognised for his significant service to the arts and charitable organisations.
Melbourne Demons hero Neale Daniher, who lives with motor neurone disease and has spent recent years raising money and awareness for the cause, was recognised as an Officer of the Order of Australia for his efforts.
A Current Affair crime editor Simon Bouda was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the television and print media, and to the community.
Mr Bouda started the Ride for Justice seven years ago to support the Homicide Victims' Support Group.
Mr Hurley said each recipient's story was unique and deserved to be widely shared.
"Collectively, they speak to who we are as a nation," he said.
"There are countless examples of selflessness, commitment and dedication.
"There is diversity and there are examples of exceptional achievement in almost every field imaginable."
Sporting star Phillips, who has dominated the AFLW with the Adelaide Crows after an illustrious professional basketball, was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for her service to both codes.
Lazarus, who earned his way into the hall of fame as a NSW and Kangaroos legend before a short-lived politics career in Queensland, was similarly awarded for his service to rugby league.
Robbie Slater, one of only a handful of Australians to win England's premier club soccer competition and a prodigious force for the Socceroos, was also awarded an OAM for his services to the game.
