The 2020 Primetime Emmys are here. Everything we know about the who, what and wear - ABC News

The 2020 Primetime Emmy awards will be broadcast live at 10:00am on Monday (AEST), and while we've been given a few clues as to how the virtual ceremony will play out, it's anyone's guess as to whether it will go off without a hitch (or a technical glitch).

Along with a few clues from the Creative Arts Emmys held over five nights this week, here's what we can expect from the televised event.

Jimmy Kimmel will host live from the Staples Center

This is Kimmel's third time hosting the Emmys but it could be be his most challenging.

The late-night talk show host will take the stage at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, just without the usual packed audience of celebrities.

Only production staff and a handful of stars will be allowed in, which would mean presenters or recipients of awards.

If it's anything like the Creative Arts Emmys, hosted by Nicole Byer from Nailed It! outside the Saban Media Center in North Hollywood, we could see various stars presenting awards in person or virtually from home.

A line-up of special guests are slated to appear in some form

They include:

  • Oprah Winfrey
  • Morgan Freeman
  • Sterling K Brown from This is Us
  • Jason Bateman from Ozark
  • Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, creators and stars of Broad City
  • Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of Hamilton
  • Randall Park, Fresh off the Boat, Veep
  • Ru Paul of Ru Paul's Drag Race
  • Jason Sudeikis, best known for Horrible Bosses, Hall Pass and We're the Millers
  • Count Von Count from Sesame Street

There are bound to be a few awkward moments

After all, this is the first Emmys of its kind.

Reginald Hudlin, one of the executive producers of this year's show, said they had scrapped parts of the traditional format for presenting awards.

Hoping to avoid the feel of a Zoom call, staff have shipped dozens of movie-quality cameras, lights and microphones to capture live and spontaneous reactions from winners in their living rooms.

Producers will be monitoring 130 live feeds from about 20 cities, including Los Angeles, New York, London, Tel Aviv and Berlin.

Casts of some series will gather together to watch the broadcast.

We can expect a higher-calibre production and more real-time experience than the Creative Arts Emmys — which is running across five nights this week — where some presenters and nominees pre-recorded and self-recorded their intros and acceptance speeches.

Winners then found out they won when they saw their acceptance speech played during the live stream, like composer Laura Karpman:

We also saw some presenters not looking straight into their camera lens, or record themselves with their finger over the lens.

The Academy is banking on the unexpected

TV audiences for awards shows have slumped in recent years and last year's Emmys drew a record-low viewership of 6.9 million.

Producers are hoping the unpredictability of this year's format will draw in some interest, and they admit things might go wrong.

"Multiply that by a million, and that's what we're dealing with here."

One thing is for sure: Tyler Perry will receive this year's Governors Award

Speaking of awards, Tyler Perry and his Perry foundation will be honoured with the Television Academy's 2020 Governors Award.

Every year it is awarded to an individual or organisation whose achievement is "so exceptional" that it "goes beyond the scope of annual Emmy Awards recognition".

Chosen by the academy board of governors, Perry was picked for his "unprecedented achievements in television" and "commitment to offering opportunities to marginalised communities".

Perry has made 22 feature films, more than 20 stage plays, 13 television shows and two bestselling books.

Fashion-wise, expect anything from sweatpants to couture

While we won't have a red carpet, for Australian viewers we will have a countdown to the red carpet broadcast on Foxtel's E! channel from 8:30am to 10:00am and a pre-show running from 9:30am-10am on Arena.

This is where we could expect to see some interviews and outfit displays, or social media posts from people having their own Emmys parties at home.

Although, with an informal theme of "come as you are but make an effort", we're bound to see some varying interpretations.

Breanne Heldman, a senior TV editor for People magazine, expects stars will still don notable attire throughout the show.

Some might wear masks that match their outfits, which could range from sweatpants or pyjamas to high fashion, she said.

"Put on those Jimmy Choos. You don't have to walk around in them."

We'll probably still have the usual political messages

Awards ceremonies and acceptance speeches have become spaces where celebrities give air time to an issue or cause they care about.

Looking back in recent years, there was #JeSuisCharlie in 2015, #AskHerMore in 2016, and #MeToo and #TimesUp in 2018-2019.

And even though it's the Emmys and it was virtual, the Creative Arts awards this week proved that we should still expect some messages come Monday.

This week we saw presenters and winners speak about the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as messages like "go vegan", "all in this together" and "just wear the damn mask".
