Michael Clarke’s appeal hasn’t dimmed from the moment he made his international debut — but sometimes he wishes it had.
Even though the former Australian cricket captain gave the game away in 2015, the public appetite for morsels about his private life has always been as insatiable as his appetite for runs while wearing the baggy green.
It’s why Clarke dominated the headlines earlier this year when news broke he had split with wife of seven years, Kyly Boldy. It’s also why he’s remained a paparazzi favourite as he moved on with new flame, fashion designer Pip Edwards.
And of course, before all that, there was his engagement to Lara Bingle of “where the bloody hell are ya” fame.
Clarke’s centuries dominated the sports section of the newspaper but his love life was never far from the gossip pages — a fascination that still irks the 39-year-old.
“The people who know me know I’m extremely private or try and be as private as I can with my personal life,” Clarke told Stellar, on sale in today’s Sunday Telegraph and Sunday Herald Sun.
“I’ve never been able to comprehend why people are interested in my personal life, cause I’m not like that.
“I’m not going to buy a magazine to read about Denzel Washington’s personal life. I don’t care who he’s married to (or) who he’s dating. I love him as an actor.
“If something is thrown at my daughter or my partner at the time, it always hits me much harder than something thrown at me.”
Clarke’s break-up with Boldy was amicable. The cricketer turned radio host said in June the pair remain friends and are committed to doing what’s best for their four-year-old daughter Kelsey Lee.
“I can sit here and say my daughter is the most important thing in my world,” Clarke told Stellar. “I’ve got a wonderful relationship and friendship with Kyly.
“I’m so happy right now. I’m in a great place. That’s all I can ask for.”
Clarke and Edwards, the co-founder of fashion label P.E. Nation, kept things low-key in the early stages of the blossoming romance but are now comfortable flaunting their relationship on social media.
They recently holidayed in Noosa with Kelsey Lee and Edwards’ teenage son from a previous relationship, and have a healthy collection of happy snaps littered throughout their Instagram accounts.
