Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Tom Hanks, Robert Pattinson, Boris Johnson and other public figures who have caught coronavirus - ABC News

Fame is no guarantee that COVID-19 won't affect you, with some of the world's most high-profile figures confirming they've battled the virus.

From singers and musicians to actors to politicians, some big names both in Australia and around the world have tested positive for coronavirus since the pandemic began.

Here are just some of the celebrities and public figures who have caught COVID-19.

US media reports British actor Robert Pattinson has reportedly contracted coronavirus, temporarily suspending work on his latest film The Batman.

A Warner Bros spokesperson confirmed to Vanity Fair that a member of The Batman production tested positive for the virus, but didn't comment on the individual or their health.

The spokesperson said the individual was "isolating in accordance with established protocols."

Ann Sarnoff, head of WarnerMedia Studios & Networks, also declined to comment on specifics in an interview with Variety, citing privacy concerns.

Filming of the movie had resumed just days ago, after first being put on hold in March due to the pandemic.

One of Hollywood's biggest names, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, took to social media to confirm he and his family had recovered after contracting COVID-19.

The 48-year-old, his wife Lauren and their two young daughters, aged 4 and 2, contracted the virus from close friends.

In a video posted online, the former wrestler says overcoming the virus was one of the most challenging things his family had been through.

"I wish it was only me who tested positive, but it wasn't," he said in the video.

He urged people to follow health advice and wear masks.

Brazillian football superstar Neymar tested positive for coronavirus this week after returning from a holiday at the Spanish island of Ibiza.

His father and nine-year-old son were also infected.

Brazilian media reported the Paris Saint-Germain striker cut short his trip and returned to the French capital on Sunday after feeling unwell.

He's one of a number of PSG players who have tested positive.

The Charmed actor revealed on social media that she sought an antibody test after a series of negative initial tests, which came back positive last month.

She said she first became unwell in March with severe symptoms, some of which lingered for weeks and even months.

"This illness is not a hoax," she shared on Instagram.

"I thought I was dying. It felt like I was dying."

Milano has kept fans updated on her recovery, sharing just this week that she's still experiencing heart palpitations and forgetting words.

The Breaking Bad star revealed on social media in late July that he had recovered from COVID-19, urging people to wear masks.

The video posted to Instagram showed Cranston going through a plasma-donation session, something he decided to do after contracting the virus.

"I wanted to announce that I had COVID-19 a little while ago," he said.

"I count my blessings and urge you to keep wearing the damn mask, keep washing your hands, and stay socially distant."

Nick Cordero

The Tony Award-nominated Broadway actor died in Los Angeles in July from severe medical complications after contracting the coronavirus.

His wife, actor Amanda Kloots, said the 41-year-old spent more than 90 days in hospital.

Cordero was taken to emergency on March 30 and had a succession of health setbacks, including mini-strokes, blood clots, septic infections and a temporary pacemaker implanted.

He had been unconscious on a ventilator with doctors considering a double lung transplant, and had his right leg amputated.

"My heart is broken as I cannot imagine our lives without him. Nick was such a bright light," Kloots posted to Instagram after his death.

The 17-time grand slam champion and his wife tested positive for the virus after the ill-fated Adria Tour events in June, which brought together professional tennis players from various countries to play in Serbia and Croatia.

Djokovic later apologised for organising the tour, where no social distancing was observed and crowds of spectators attended.

Djokovic's father blamed the cancellation of the tour on Bulgarian star Grigor Dimitrov, one of the three other players to test positive after the tournament.

There was no evidence at that time to suggest Dimitrov spread the virus to others.

The UK Prime Minister was hit hard by the virus, doing a stint in intensive care after first being admitted to hospital on April 5.

He was discharged a week later, and continued to recover at home before returning to work.

Mr Johnson recognised doctors and NHS staff in a video on Twitter shortly after his release from hospital, saying it was "hard to find words to express my debt".

"I can't thank them enough," Johnson said in his first public statement after he was moved out of intensive care. "I owe them my life."

The UK's Health Secretary Matt Hancock and Health Minister Nadine Dorries are among other British politicians to have tested positive for the virus.

Idris Elba

British actor Idris Elba and his wife, model Sabrina Dhowre Elba, said their experience was "definitely scary, unsettling and nervous" after they contracted coronavirus.

The couple only reported mild symptoms, and launched a fund to lessen the impact of COVID-19 on farmers and food producers in rural areas.

Elba said the pandemic was a reminder that "the world doesn't tick on your time".

"I think that the world should take a week of quarantine every year just to remember this time. Remember each other. I really do," he said.

Mel Gibson

A representative for Mel Gibson said the actor was hospitalised with COVID-19 in Los Angeles after he tested positive in April.

Gibson spent a week in hospital and was reportedly treated with the drug remdesivir.

He has since recovered and "tested negative numerous times since then", his representative said.

A statement on behalf of the actor also said he was doing "great."

Pop star P!nk, real name Alecia Beth Moore, revealed on Instagram in April that she and her young son Jameson tested positive.

Both have recovered, and she took the opportunity to call on the US Government to make testing easier to access.

"This illness is serious and real," she wrote.

"People need to know that the illness affects the young and old, healthy and unhealthy, rich and poor, and we must make testing free and more widely accessible to protect our children, our families, our friends and our communities."

Peter Dutton

The Federal Home Affairs Minister tested positive in March, after experiencing a temperature and sore throat.

He released a statement confirming the diagnosis, saying "I feel fine and will provide an update in due course".

A spokesperson for Scott Morrison said the Prime Minister and other members of the Cabinet did not have to self-isolate after Mr Dutton tested positive, based on health advice.

Mr Dutton was hospitalised based on advice from Queensland Health, and has since recovered.

The 71-year-old heir to the British throne tested positive for coronavirus in March.

A statement from Clarence House at the time said he was in good health despite the diagnosis, but that it wasn't immediately clear where he caught COVID-19.

"It is not possible to ascertain from whom the Prince caught the virus owing to the high number of engagements he carried out in his public role during the recent weeks," the statement read.

The positive test came soon after news that Prince Albert of Monaco tested positive for COVID-19, the first monarch to be diagnosed with the disease.

He and Prince Charles attended the same charity event in London on March 10.

Richard Wilkins

The TV personality was one of the first big names to test positive in Australia.

Nine News confirmed in March that the network's entertainment editor and Weekend Today host had contracted the virus.

Wilkins was in close contact with Rita Wilson prior to testing positive.

"My experience pales to insignificance of course in comparison to thousands of others who have subsequently contracted the virus, but nevertheless it was a pretty strange and unforgettable time in my life," he said after recovering.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson

American actor Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson tested positive for coronavirus on the Gold Coast in March.

Hanks was in Queensland to work on an Elvis biopic with director Baz Luhrmann — production was put on hold after the diagnosis.

The couple were hospitalised with the virus, before being released into self-isolation.

Hanks thanked "everyone here Down Under" for their care on social media.

There were less than 100 confirmed infections in Queensland at the time — there are now more than 1,100.
