British TV presenter Jeremy Vine slammed for suggesting Prince Philip’s funeral is a racial issue - PerthNow

Prominent British television presenter Jeremy Vine has been accused of “race-baiting” after questioning why there were no people of colour invited to Prince Philip’s funeral.

The Channel 5 host was talking with a guest on his self-titled show about whether it was a “problem” that all guests attending the scaled-back service for the Duke at Windsor Castle on Saturday would all be white.

“We are going to see a group of 30 people at this very restricted funeral, and I imagine it will be 30 people who are white,” Vine said on the show.

“I’m just trying to think whether there’s anybody of colour in there and I don’t think so.

“Do you think that’s a problem?”

Radio presenter Shay Grewal responded to Vine and said she didn’t see it as a problem because “at the end of the day, the Royal Family are a family”.

Vine’s comments sparked outrage online, accusing him of “race-baiting” for deliberately encouraging racism.

Political adviser and commentator Calvin Robinson was one of the many people to take aim at Vine.

“Jeremy Vine even manages to turn HRH Prince Philip’s funeral into a race issue,” Robinson wrote on Twitter.

“I’m so tired of this divisive narrative. Identity politics has taken over and it’s insidious. I appreciate the irony of this, but can we please stop talking about race!”

Talkback radio host in the UK, Patrick Christys retweeted Robinson’s post and said the “problem” was Jeremy Vine.

“The only ‘problem’ Jeremy Vine is people like you trying to race bait Prince Philip’s funeral,” he wrote.

“It’s hardly a shock that our white skinned Queen & Prince Philip didn’t have any mixed race children.

“Those children happened to marry white people & they’re at the funeral. So what?!”

It comes as more than 100,000 complaints were made to the BBC for the amount of coverage on Prince Philip’s death, who passed aged 99.
