Prince Harry and Prince William will not walk side-by-side in the procession behind the Duke of Edinburgh's coffin at his funeral, it has been revealed.
Key points:
- Prince William and Prince Harry will be separated by their cousin Peter Phillips when walking behind Prince Philip's coffin during his funeral procession
- The Queen will be seated alone during the service and will wear a mask, as will the other 29 guests
- A Buckingham Palace spokesman said all arrangements were the Queen's wishes and the palace wouldn't be drawn into "drama"
On Thursday Buckingham Palace released further details of Prince Philip's ceremonial royal funeral, which will take place at Windsor Castle on Saturday afternoon local time (early Sunday AEST), including that senior royals will wear morning suits instead of military uniforms traditionally worn on such occasions.
Prince Philip died aged 99 at Windsor Castle on April 9 after a 73-year marriage to the Queen.
The palace said Harry and William, who reportedly have not spoken since the Sussexes' explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey last month, will be separated by their cousin Peter Phillips as they take part in the funeral procession to escort the duke's coffin to St George's Chapel inside the castle.
The 15-member procession will be led by Prince Charles and Princess Anne, the Queen and Prince Phillip's eldest children.
Behind them will be their two younger brothers, Prince Edward and Prince Andrew, followed by Harry, Mr Phillips and William in line.
"We're not going to be drawn into those perceptions of drama, or anything like that," a palace spokesman said when questioned by reporters over the decision to split the brothers.
"This is a funeral.
"The arrangements have been agreed, and they represent her majesty's wishes."
The Queen will follow the procession in the State Bentley and a minute's national silence will occur at 3:00pm BST (12:00am AEST) before the 50-minute service begins.
The palace also revealed the first images of the specially built Land Rover Prince Philip helped design to carry his coffin to his own funeral.
The Land Rover was originally built in 2003, when the duke was 82, and he designed the open-top rear section that will hold his casket.
It has been by maintained and updated by Land Rover over the years, with the most recent modifications happening in 2019.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions all 30 guests inside St George's Chapel, including the Queen who will be seated alone, will wear masks and social distancing will occur.
Suits signed off by the Queen
During the lead-up to the funeral, there had been speculation in the UK media over whether Prince Harry and Prince Andrew, two non-working royals, would wear civilian clothes as opposed to the traditional military uniforms donned during formal occasions.
Prince Harry stepped away from his royal role earlier this year and was subsequently stripped of his patronages and honorary military titles, while Prince Andrew was forced to step out of the limelight in late 2019 following a disastrous BBC interview over his friendship with late pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Both princes are the only two royals that have seen active service – Prince Harry having served in Afghanistan and Prince Andrew as a helicopter pilot during the Falklands War in 1982.
Instead, all royal family members will wear civilian clothing with their medals attached.
"Members of the royal family will be wearing morning coat with medals or day dress," a palace spokesman said.
