A TV show prank went horribly wrong at an event billed as a “thought-provoking” discussion of love and marriage featuring high profile feminist authors.
Audience members vented their frustration at the panel of Antoinette Lattouf, Clementine Ford and Yumi Stynes after it was revealed the free event had been commandeered by the Inspired Unemployed’s television program.
One of the comedy group’s founders Jack Steele had joined the panel as a “special guest” at The Neilson at Sydney’s Walsh Bay to give his “perspective as a young male”.
The Inspired Unemployed have more than two million social media followers, but some members of the crowd were unaware who Steele was.
It wasn’t until after the discussion at the event advertised as Love Unboxed that the crowd learned Steele’s comments, some of which were described as “mysoginstic”, were being fed to him through an earpiece.
The TV show Impractical Jokers sees members of the Inspired Unemployed being put in uncomfortable situations and ordered to say what they are told or else face “punishment”.
It was reported in the Sydney Morning Herald that Steele was unaware of what the event would be and his “face just dropped” when that became clear.
The event was plugged by Ford on her Instagram page earlier week, in which she pointed her followers toward the free tickets.
“Come see me, @antoinette_lattouf and @yumichild break down love’n’stuff and generally have a good time being smart cookie,” she wrote. ️
Lattouf responded to the post: “Looking forward to this @yumichild and @clementine_ford”.
After the show on Wednesday night, as members of the audience expressed their disappointment, Steele stood up to leave and apologised to the 100 people in attendance.
“I’m very sorry guys. I look like a f***wit and you all hate me … from the bottom of my heart, I’m sorry,” he said.
Witnesses have shared online some of his answers to audience questions after the panel threw to him to comment.
The reported remarks included “I think chicks dig consent” and “I really like girl writers”.
That last comment drew an “audible gasp” from the crowd, one witness said, and some people decided to leave the venue ”because they couldn’t take it anymore”.
Some of the comments could have “triggered” people who did not know who Steele was or that he was being force-fed his answers, the witness said.
“We limped through 50 minutes of feminist hell for a social experiment,” she said.
“You could tell that (the prank) was a man’s idea.
“You had this huge audience coming for something genuine just to be slapped across the face.”
Footage posted to Instagram shows audience members expressing feelings of betrayal to the panel after the show.
“It comes down to consent,” one said, with murmurs of approval from the crowd.
Another told Lattouf, Ford and Stynes she accepted their apologies and believed they did not participate with bad intentions.
“I still love you all,” the crowd member said. “But this was a shit show.”
Lattouf could be seen to lean over and speak to Steele before he got up to leave the stage.
He turned back to the crowd to apologise before he walked out.
Followers of Ford have since commented on her post advertising the event on Tuesday, with one saying it was “a completely mockery” and “painfully unfunny”.
“Your voice has been a beacon of inspiration for many, including myself,” another said.
“So, to witness your participation in a prank show, where the very essence of feminism seemed to be twisted and exploited for laughs, was disheartening, to say the least.”
