Arj calls out audience in first show back - news.com.au

Comedian Arj Barker made a surprise return to the stage this week, days after his now-infamous stand-up show at Melbourne’s Athanaeum Theatre last Saturday.

Days after the incident that saw Barker eject a mother and her crying baby from his show, the American comic was back on stage, this time at The Comic’s Lounge in North Melbourne.

And he was quick to address the elephant in the room, poking fun at the scandal during his set.

“This whole thing has been a little intense,” Barker begins in the clip, before pointing to one area of the audience and complaining: “I can hear someone’s stomach rumbling. I just want you to know this is your last warning.”

Turning to another area of the audience, he called out “a gentleman 12 seats back … mid-30s … when you inhale there’s a slight whistling with your nose.

“Get the f**k out,” he deadpanned.

Barker then said he needed to get home to wade through the thousands of unread messages in his “hate-mail box”.

“There’s lots of supportive ones, too. I’m grateful. I didn’t come here to change anyone’s mind, but a few of the emails I read said ‘go home’,” revealed Barker, who was born in San Fransisco but is primarily Melbourne-based.

“I said, I will, because I am home,” he continued.

“I love Australia and I’m going to keep touring around it.”

As with all things Arj this week, the post attracted mixed comments: Many praised the comic for getting back on stage to poke fun at the scandal, while others expressed their anger at his treatment of the mother at the centre of the incident.

Meanwhile, Barker and the mother in question went head-to-head on-air this week, having embarked on their own separate media blitzes to share their respective sides of the story.

But surprisingly, the fireworks between them were nothing compared to Barker’s spat with radio host Erin Molan, who was facilitating the on-air encounter on 2DAY FM’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin on Tuesday.

After Barker took a swipe at Molan during the interview, the radio host complained that “we’ve had Arj on this show twice, and he’s shut me down on both occasions, so maybe sometimes the way that he speaks to people doesn’t always come across that well.

“I’m happy to cop it once – but that second time was actually rude,” she told him.
