Spider-Man drops ‘gasping’ first trailer - NEWS.com.au

After a week of feverish anticipation, the Spider-Man trailer is here. And it features some doozy confirmations.

“Be careful what you wish for, Parker”.

And with that, we’re off. There’s no better way to officially commence the four-month countdown to Spider-Man: No Way Home than with it first trailer.

You’ll gasp! You’ll be giddy! And you’ll shout, “Peter, what did you do?!”

If you would be happy to watch the trailer without knowing anything beforehand, now’s your chance to stop reading.

Otherwise, here goes.

The trailer confirms what many have been feverishly speculating for more than a year – that there would be a multiverse in the third Spider-Man movie, starring Tom Holland, in this current run. But here’s where things get messy.

Because the trailer also confirms the appearance of Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, a villain from Spider-Man 2, the 2004 movie that starred Tobey Maguire as the webslinger. While Molina’s role is saved for the final moments of the trailer, one of the doc’s arms is seen earlier.

Any hope for confirmation that either Maguire or Andrew Garfield would reprise their roles as alternate universe Spider-Men is dashed, for now.

But there’s a heavy Doctor Strange presence and we get to see glimpses of Spider-Man favourites Zendaya, Jacob Batalon and Jon Favreau.

As per the trailer, the story picks up after the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Peter has been unmasked as Spider-Man and is facing scrutiny and criticism thanks to Mysterio’s trap.

So, he turns to Doctor Strange and asks if there’s a spell that can somehow makes everyone forget he’s Spider-Man. Despite Wong’s warnings, Doctor Strange casts the spell anyway, but Peter’s fretting during the magical, swirly process that MJ, May and Ned will forget too causes it to go awry.

Hence, the “be careful what you wish for, Parker”.

MILD SPOILERS FOR LOKI AND WANDAVISION

And that’s when Doctor Strange utters that word that every Marvel movie and TV show going forward will likely reference, “multiverse”.

We already know the next Doctor Strange movie, due for release in 2022, is called Multiverse of Madness and the recent Loki TV series broke the multiverse wide open.

There was also speculation that the end of WandaVision may have hinted at the multiverse.

While it’s not yet clear exactly who’s responsible for the forthcoming chaos of the multiverse – perhaps Peter Parker – it’s obvious everything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is gearing towards it.

Or should that be the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse now?

Anticipation for the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer has been high in the past week, with rumours of a leak. Then overnight, Tom Holland posted a cryptic message on social media indicating the trailer release was imminent.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is in cinemas in Australia on Boxing Day.
