Brian Travers, founding member of reggae band UB40, dies of cancer aged 62 - ABC News

Brian Travers, one of the founding members of English reggae band UB40, has died aged 62.

Travers, a saxophonist and songwriter, passed away with his family by his side after a "long and heroic battle with cancer", the band said on Twitter.

"Our thoughts are with Brian's wife Lesley, his daughter Lisa and son Jamie. We are all devastated by this news and ask that you respect the family's need for privacy at this time."

UB40 member Norman Hassan tweeted: "A part of me, will forever be missing!! My brother in arms!".

While the band did not reveal what type of cancer Travers had, the musician had undergone double brain tumour surgery in 2019 after suffering a seizure.

The discovery of the tumours ended Travers' career as he underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

UB40 formed in the late 70s and was named after Unemployment Benefit Form 40, the attendance record used at the time in the United Kingdom to claim unemployment benefits.

The band's hits include Red Red Wine, I Got You Babe and their cover of Elvis Presley's song (I Can't) Help Falling in Love with You.
