Tony Martin’s feud with Mick Molloy - NEWS.com.au

Tony Martin has opened up about his “divorce” from Mick Molloy, saying it came during a “violent and shocking time” in his life.

Tony Martin has opened up about his falling out with Mick Molloy.

The two comedians began their careers together as part of the D-Generation, going on to host the hugely successful radio show Martin/Molloy in the ’90s, and later worked together on several other projects.

But their comedy partnership came to a screeching halt in the mid-2000s over a disagreement about a mockumentary that Martin made for Molloy’s 2006 film, BoyTown.

Martin told the Herald Sun at the time that the mockumentary was “probably one of the two or three best things I’ve ever done” and that he was “massively disappointed” when Molloy chose not to include the project on the film’s DVD release.

Martin rarely speaks about the breakdown of his relationship with Molloy, but he had a change of heart when chatting to Sarah Grynberg on her podcast, A Life of Greatness.

“It’s funny, you enter into a society of comedy duos who have had falling outs,” Martin told Grynberg in the podcast which was released today. “From Merrick and Rosso to Todd [Russell] and Brant [Webb], the miners, there’s been so many of them that have had falling outs over the years.

“People would ask me about it in interviews and I would say, ‘Well, we’re seeing other comedians now,’” Martin continued. “I entered into a partnership with Ed Kavalee and he’s now with Sam Pang.”

The two comedians haven’t spoken since their falling out, but Martin said on A Life of Greatness that Sam Pang has dreams of facilitating a reunion.

“I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the footage of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis being reunited on a telethon by Frank Sinatra,” Martin said. “One of them, I’m assuming Dean, is completely drunk. Sam’s always saying he wants to eventually recreate that footage with myself and Mick.

“Maybe both of us will have to be drunk for it to happen,” he joked.

Martin told Grynberg that his falling out with Molloy in the mid-2000s came at a particularly brutal time in his life.

His radio show, Get This, which he hosted with Ed Kavalee and Richard Marsland, had recently been axed by Triple M.

“It was a very violent and shocking time and particularly for me,” Martin said. “At that time I was also in the process of getting divorced, I was in the process of getting divorced from my comedy partner, Mick Molloy … so all of these shocking, violent things were happening all at once, and then of course Richard Marsland died.

“These things happened over just a few months so it was really quite a depressing period.”

Martin said that he dealt with the blows by throwing himself into a new project.

“The answer for me was to write a very personal book,” he said. “I wrote a book called A Nest of Occasionals … That’s what I used to dig my way out of a hole.”
