The Golden Globes are done and dusted for another year and as crazy as some of the nominations were, at least the winners are largely unsurprising.
Sure, the Globes snubbed the likes of I May Destroy You and Insecure completely, something that may have been alluded to in Daniel Levy’s acceptance speech, but it’s hard to argue with the winners from what was nominated.
In case you missed any of these six officially award-winning series this past year, here’s how you can watch them in Australia – but more importantly, why.
Won: Best TV Drama, Emma Corrin – Best Actress TV Drama, Josh O’Connor – Best Actor TV Drama, Gillian Anderson – Best Supporting Actress TV
The fourth season of The Crown, centred on the British royal family, is a return to form for a show that floundered in the previous season. With the arrival of era-defining women Princess Diana and Margaret Thatcher, the show dialled up the drama while still anchoring its emotions in something heartbreakingly human.

Won: Best TV Limited Series, Anya Taylor-Joy – Best Actress TV Limited Series

Based on a fictional book from the 1980s, The Queen’s Gambit is the story of addict and chess prodigy Beth Harmon, a woman in a world that didn’t take women seriously. From its sumptuous production design to Anya Taylor-Joy’s riveting performance, it’s the kind of prestige drama we don’t see much of anymore.

Won: Jason Sudeikis – Best Actor TV Comedy
A breezy comedy about a cluelessly cheerful American coach taking the reins of an English football team is setting you up to hate it, but Ted Lasso has such a generous and compassionate heart, it’s impossible to do anything but totally love it. Extreme kudos also to Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple for performances that encapsulate character growth.

Won: John Boyega – Best Supporting Actor TV

Small Axe is technically an anthology series but it’s really five movies from prodigious filmmaker Steve McQueen. All five films are stories from the West Indies community in London with John Boyega’s performance the centrepiece of Red, White and Blue, an exploration of the factitious relationship between police and an unfairly targeted community.

SCHITT’S CREEK S6
Won: Best Comedy Series, Catherine O’Hara – Best Actress TV Comedy
When Schitt’s Creek kicked off in the first season, few expected the awkward and absurd comedy about a rich family that loses everything would morph into a series that would give you the warm and fuzzies. It was a beautiful send-off for the Roses and for the audience.

Won: Mark Ruffalo – Best Actor TV Limited Series
Mark Ruffalo’s emotionally heavy miniseries sees him pulling double duty as identical twins – even just one of these roles would’ve been intense enough but two, no wonder he won here and at the Emmys. Derek Cianfrances’ drama is about a man trying to save his schizophrenic brother from a mental institution.
