Sunrise hosts congratulate Sam Armytage on her surprise engagement - as Kochie says the wedding will be TELEVISED from Hamilton Island

Sunrise host Sam Armytage got engaged to businessman Richard Lavender over the weekend - and no one was more excited than her co-host David 'Kochie' Koch.

The Channel Seven breakfast crew congratulated Sam on Monday morning, and her longtime colleague couldn't resist taking charge of the upcoming nuptials.

He began: 'There's some very, very exciting news from the Sunrise family... Sam's engaged! Look at that rock! Congratulations to Sam and Richard from everyone here at Sunrise.'

Congrats! On Monday, the Sunrise crew congratulated Sam Armytage and Richard Lavender on their surprise engagement. Host David Koch (right, with newsreader Natalie Barr) joked that the couple's wedding would be broadcast live from Hamilton Island

Kochie then joked he had 'put in a bit of work' finding a wedding venue on Hamilton Island, one of the Whitsunday Islands in Queensland.

He also cheekily suggested getting Greg Evans, the host of 1980s dating show Perfect Match, to be the couple's marriage celebrant.

The 64-year-old even hinted the ceremony would be televised, but newsreader Natalie Barr said that Sam, who is notoriously private, wouldn't like that.

Brushing off Kochie's enthusiasm, Natalie said sarcastically: 'There's nothing like someone else planning your wedding!'

Richard has two daughters, Grace and Sasha, while Sam has no children.

Speaking to WHO magazine's Sexiest People issue late last year, the Channel Seven host praised her partner as a 'decent' and 'very honest' man.

She revealed they had been introduced by a mutual friend 'around Easter' and shared an instant connection.

Sam added that the most attractive thing about Richard was his self-confidence.

Meanwhile, Richard said that he was drawn to Sam because of 'the sparkle in her eye' and their shared passion for horses and the outdoors.
