Four child witnesses could give evidence against MasterChef contestant - The Age

During a short hearing conducted online by the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday, prosecutor Stephen Payne said he planned to call four child witnesses to give evidence.

All four live interstate and may give their evidence via video link. A contested hearing would likely go for between five and seven days, he said.

"There doesn't appear any prospect of the matter resolving at this point in time," Mr Payne said.

Mr Ungermann is currently on bail and was not present at the hearing. The matter will return to court on October 22 for a contest mention.

MasterChef: Back to Win, which features contestants from past seasons, has been filming in Melbourne since January and continued after the introduction of restrictions in Victoria due to coronavirus, with safety measures in place.

It was first reported in mid-March that Mr Ungermann had been arrested, with MasterChef's production company Endemol releasing a statement confirming he had left the show due to an issue of a "personal nature”, and that police were involved.

The show premiered several weeks later on April 13. Mr Ungermann was featured prominently in the show until viewers noticed he wasn’t in an episode on May 14. The allegations came to light five days later.

Mr Ungermann’s image was dropped from the opening credits of the show hours after the allegations were made public.

With his brother, he founded gourmet Ipswich ice-cream parlour The Ungermann Brothers.

In an episode which aired on May 17, host Jock Zonfrillo told the other MasterChef contestants that Mr Ungermann had left due to a "personal matter".

"Ben has had to leave the competition and he will not be returning," he said.

Mr Ungermann was runner-up in season nine in 2017.

He announced on social media he was returning to MasterChef on February 25. Most recently he has been working at the Woodlands of Marburg in Queensland.

The venue shared a picture on Instagram of Mr Ungermann in mid-May, saying he was their new "gourmet chef". As recently as this week, the account shared their new menu which is "designed and cooked by Ben Ungermann".
