What to stream this week: Heroes, Quiz, Utopia, Shetland and more - NEWS.com.au

From an old favourite that thrills and excites to some of the strongest new TV shows of this year, we’ve got your weekend sorted.

SOMETHING FAMILIAR

Heroes: Save the cheerleader, save the world. Remember how exhilarating that first season of Heroes was, when each of the characters would discover their powers? What a rush. Compulsive and complex, the comic book-like Heroes made fighters not out of soldiers, but of everyday people tasked with saving the world. Watch it: 9Now/Foxtel Now/Binge/Amazon Prime Video

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: She saved the world a lot. She also quipped a lot. For seven years, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was like a religion to its legion of devoted fans, following the exploits of a teenage girl with the burden of the world on her shoulders, protecting it from all manners of nasty ghouls. It started off as a metaphor for high school as hell but it ended up a pop cultural phenomenon. Watch it: Stan/Foxtel Now (2 seasons)

SOMETHING NEW

Quiz: This three-part miniseries is one of the strongest new TV shows of the year so far, a fascinating and twisty dramatisation of one of the most bizarre scandals from the UK. In 2001, an army major won the top prize on Who Wants to be a Millionaire but was swiftly accused of cheating. Did he really do it? Watch it: Foxtel Now/Fetch

Dead Still: Madame Tussauds started her career making death masks during the French Revolution, so it’s not so strange that there were photographers in the early days of the technology that specialised in memorial pictures – photos of the dead. This six-part Irish-Canadian fictional series follows one, played by Luther’s Michael Smiley, as he becomes embroiled in a murder investigation. Watch it: Acorn TV, from June 29

SOMETHING HILARIOUS

What We Do in the Shadows S2: Few people could’ve known that an American TV remake of Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s dry, hilarious mockumentary would’ve worked. Not only did it work, but it surpassed all expectations, transporting the story of vampire housemates from Wellington to Staten Island. Season two returns this week, and it’s guaranteed to make you laugh. Watch it: Foxtel Now/Binge

Binge is Australia’s new streaming service offering the best drama, entertainment and movies from the world’s best creators. New to Binge? Get your two week free trial, sign up at binge.com.au

Utopia: There is always humour to be mined from the farce that is government bureaucracy. No matter how well-meaning you are about serving the public, there’s always someone else who has a different, PR-driven, egomaniacal agenda. Set inside a fictional infrastructure agency, the Working Dog series will make you chuckle and cry at the same time. Watch it: Stan

SOMETHING MYSTERIOUS

Lambs of God: A moody drama with a gothic aesthetic, Lambs of God doesn’t go where you expect it to. Three nuns are cloistered on an isolated island (talk about social distancing), but they’ve long shaken off the patriarchal teachings of the church, instead forming their own matriarchal belief system. Then one day, a young priest steps foot in their home. It stars Ann Dowd, Essie Davis and Jessica Barden. Watch it: Foxtel Now/Binge

Shetland: If you’ve watched all the Scandi noir there is, try your hand at Shetland, set on the windy, sparse Shetland Islands, so far off the north coast of Scotland you’re halfway to Scandinavia anyway. Based on books by Ann Cleeves, the series revolves around a detective named Jimmy Perez, solving the mysteries of his unforgiving home. Watch it: Netflix (3 seasons)/Foxtel Now (1 season)

SOMETHING BY THE COENS

Technically, this would be live TV (horrors!) rather than strictly streaming but SBS has been doing themed weeks on its World Movies channels, including the films of Adam Driver or Nicole Kidman. Next week, it’s the work of Joel and Ethan Coen, filmmaking brothers known for writing, producing, directing and editing (under the name Roderick Jaynes) a slew of funny, dark and bonkers movies.

Get your Coens fix with SBS’s selection including No Country for Old Men (Monday, 9.30pm or Stan/Amazon), Miller’s Crossing (Tuesday, 9.30pm), Barton Fink (Wednesday, 9.30pm), Raising Arizona(Thursday, 9.30pm), Intolerable Cruelty(Friday 7.45pm) and True Grit(Friday, 9.30pm or Stan).
