Harry and Meghan join A-list speakers' agency - Sydney Morning Herald

Los Angeles: Prince Harry and wife Meghan are ready to hit the speakers' circuit after signing with an agency that works with the Obamas and other high-profile clients, according to a person familiar with their plans.

The pair is being represented by the New York-based Harry Walker Agency, whose roster of speakers includes Barack and Michelle Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton and Oprah Winfrey, the person said.

The move is one of the first major steps by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to engage in paid work beyond the British royal family after they announced plans in January to lead a more independent life and to finance it themselves.

They now live in Los Angeles with their one-year-old son Archie, according to media reports.

The couple's speaking engagements will focus on issues such as racial justice, gender equity, the environment and mental health, an important topic to Prince Harry who has talked publicly about his struggles with grief following the death of his mother, Princess Diana.

The arrangement with Harry Walker, owned by media company Endeavour, the parent company of WME, was first reported by the Los Angeles Times.

The speaking circuit can be lucrative for high-profile celebrities. Big-name speakers can earn six figures for a single appearance.

Obama reportedly earned $US400,000 for ($582,000) one 2017 speech, while the Clintons averaged $250,000 per appearance in 2014. It is unclear what speaking fees will be for Harry and Meghan, who will appear both together or individually.

There are reportedly no plans to accept any speaking engagements about the royal life they have left behind.

The couple's roles as senior royals in Britain ended in March, and they've made their California home in a nine hectare Beverly Hills property owned by filmmaker Tyler Perry, according to reports.

They gave up use of the title "royal highness" and no longer receive British public funds for their work.

Meghan recently narrated a Disney nature documentary and Harry teamed with Winfrey for an upcoming mental health documentary. Both projects were in the works before they stepped back from the royal family.

The two had originally planned to launch a new venture under the name Sussex Royal but, after negotiating their exit, had to abandon that name and the associated - and hugely popular - Instagram account.

They have since named their philanthropic foundation Archewell, which combines ancient Greek words for strength and action and was also the inspiration for their son's name, Archie.

The couple's recent appearances have largely been in private.

Earlier this month, Meghan shared her sadness over racial divisions in the US, addressing graduates at her former high school in Los Angeles.

Prince Harry spoke at a private JP Morgan event in Miami - where he reportedly discussed mental health - and they have both participated in video calls with charities.

On Tuesday, they donned hair nets, aprons and face masks to bake with employees of Homeboy Industries, a Los Angeles-based social justice organisation that hires former prisoners and gang members.
