Mel Gibson axed from reprising Chicken Run role after Winona Ryder repeats anti-Semitic claims from 2010 - PerthNow

Mel Gibson has been axed from reprising his role in Chicken Run after Winona Ryder repeated claims that the actor spewed anti-Semitic slurs at a party in 1996.

According to The Wrap, production sources confirmed that the 64-year-old actor would be replaced on the Netflix sequel to Chicken Run after the story erupted online.

In 2010, Ryder spoke about her own experiences with anti-Semitism in Hollywood during an interview with GQ.

She said at the time while she was not religious, she had family who died in Nazi Jewish camps.

“There are times when people have said, ‘Wait, you’re Jewish? But you’re so pretty,” Ryder said.

She went on to make bombshell claims that Gibson made several remarks when the topic of Jewish faith was brought up while he was smoking a cigar.

“We were at a crowded party with one of my good friends, and Mel Gibson was smoking a cigar,” Ryder said.

She then alleged Gibson said: “You’re not an oven dodger, are you?” — seemingly referring to how Jewish prisoners were incinerated during the Nazi movement.

The Stranger Things actress also said he offended her gay friend remarking “Oh, wait, am I gonna get AIDS?” before attempting to apologise later.

Ryder repeated the 2010 allegations in an interview with The Times on Sunday.

Gibson’s camp has vehemently denied the allegations, saying they are “100 per cent untrue”.

“She lied about it over a decade ago, when she talked to the press, and she’s lying about it now,” a spokesperson said.

But Ryder hit back in response to Gibson’s denial.

“I believe in redemption and forgiveness and hope that Mr Gibson has found a healthy way to deal with his demons, but I am not one of them,” she said in a statement.

“Around 1996, my friend Kevyn Aucoin and I were on the receiving end of his hateful words. It is a painful and vivid memory for me. Only by accepting responsibility for our behaviour in this life, can we make amends and truly respect each other, and I wish him well on this lifelong journey.”

It’s not the first time Gibson has made disturbing anti-Semitism remarks.

During a DUI arrest in 2006 a police report revealed he had said: “The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world!”

In 2016 he spoke out about the incident, telling Variety is was “an unfortunate incident”.

“I was loaded and angry and arrested. I was recorded illegally by an unscrupulous police officer who was never prosecuted for that crime. And then it was made public by him for profit, and by members of — we’ll call it the press. So, not fair. I guess as who I am, I’m not allowed to have a nervous breakdown, ever.”
