A former winner of The Voice Australia has sent a warning to this year’s current contestants: “Don’t expect to become a star.”
Judah Kelly, who won the show back in 2017, told news.com.au that contestants on the reality show need to realise the public don’t really care about them.
“People aren’t really fans of you, they’re fans of the show,” Kelly said. “That’s what I found.
“They might stick around on social media (after the show has ended) and give you a ‘like’, but when it comes to paying for tickets and buying albums, the numbers don’t translate.”
The Voice Australia is currently in its ninth season, but the show is yet to produce a superstar.
Kelly said people who appear on The Voice should focus on enjoying the experience rather than expecting it will make them a household name.
“When it came to the show, I didn’t really care,” he told news.com.au. “I was just there to have a good time.
“I think some people go in expecting to win and that’s a problem.”
Kelly said he had low expectations when he appeared on The Voice after having a “not very enjoyable” experience on The X Factor Australia a couple of years earlier.
“My attitude (on The Voice) was that I’m going to make it past the audition and then get kicked out for someone who is maybe not a better singer but who looks better on TV,” he told news.com.au. “That’s all I expected the whole time.
“It wasn’t until I made the top four until I thought I genuinely had a chance of winning.”
Kelly also warned contestants not to expect to make any money from the show, revealing that the artists on his season didn’t get paid for the songs they performed on the show which were released as singles.
“No, we didn’t get paid for recording those, but that’s fair because it’s not as if we paid for them to be recorded,” he told news.com.au.

At least one contestant on Kelly’s season of The Voice did expect to get paid for the tracks though.
“Some people didn’t read contracts and probably didn’t understand how it all worked going in,” Kelly said. “I know there was someone who sent an email saying, ‘hey, where’s our money for that?’”
Kelly won $100,000 and a recording contract with Universal Music Australia when he was crowned the winner of the Channel 9 show.
He went on to release two albums with the record label - the first peaking at number 3 on Aussie charts and the second peaking at number 38.
“A third album hasn’t been discussed because I haven’t gone forward with demos,” Kelly told news.com.au. “I was going to this year … but with a tour falling through (due to COVID-19) it didn’t make sense to release music.”
Instead, Kelly has spent the first half of the year focusing on his health and has so far lost 40kg in six months.
