Daryl Braithwaite is on the phone reminiscing about the first tune he sang as a child. He's struggling to remember its name, yet, as the melody floods back to him he breaks into song.
The legendary Aussie singer-songwriter has spent 50 years captivating audiences with his pop anthems, first as the front man with iconic group Sherbet then as a solo artist. Today, after seven years, Braithwaite returns with new music in 'Love Songs' — a single which found him serendipitously.
"It was sent to me by an old friend of mine. He wanted to know if I could forward it to my friend, ex-Sherbet manager and Pink's manager, Roger Davies," Braithwaite tells 9Honey Celebrity. "He wanted to see if Pink would like it."

The Melbourne singer had the demo for 'Love Songs' for two days before emailing it to Davies. Its melody had struck him as something special.
"I had a listen to it and thought 'my good God, it sounds like Pink'," he says. "So, I sent it on from my phone and I don't think Roger ever got it."
As Braithwaite recalls, it was during a lunch with Davies some three months later the subject of the song resurfaced.
The 'One Summer' singer was right, Davies never received the email. It had created a somewhat nervous moment for the ARIA Hall of Famer.
He and his band had started playing 'Love Songs' at gigs and realised it was a crowd pleaser.
Later, when Davies checked his emails, he found no sign of the demo. When he finally heard 'Love Songs', luck would fall Braithwaite's way.
Pink was taking a break from recording and so Davies passed on her behalf.
"He had a listen and he said 'no, it sounds more like you'," Braithwaite says. "I think he might have done me a favour or something, he's like that anyway."
'Love Songs' is written by Grammy award nominated Australian songwriter Michael Fatkin and Los Angeles based writers Rozzi Crane and Charlie Synder.
Fatkin has worked with local artists such as Jessica Mauboy, Stan Walker, Jai Waetford, Tina Arena and The McClymonts.
'Love Songs' is pure Braithwaite pop, with the 71-year-old's vocals — stripped back, raw yet alive — the shining star.
It is his first new music since his 2017 Forever The Tourist mini-album and, depending on its reception, could pave the way for another solo release.
"I'd say there will be. I'll be hopefully working on it next year," he says.
Ever since hearing songs like 'Secret Love' by 1960s UK songstress Kathy Kirby, pop has had an everlasting effect on Braithwaite. It was the first song he, his twin brother, Glenn, and their father would sing around the house together. That was, until The Beatles came along.
In his five decades as a musician, Braithwaite has released 17 studio albums — 10 with Sherbet and seven solo albums.
Two of his solo albums have gone multi-platinum. One of them, Rise, was the highest selling album of 1991. It is also the album with the most longevity with fans old and new thanks to a single track — 'The Horses'.
Braithwaite released the cover of Rickie Lee Jones' song in January 1991. It shot to the top of the Australian charts that May and has been certified six times platinum.
The cover would return to the top of the Australian charts in 2016, marking its 25th anniversary. A year later in 2017, Braithwaite was named in The Falls Festival line-up alongside acts including Flume, Liam Gallagher and The Kooks.
"I've spoken to Ricki Lee Jones and told her how successful it had been and how it was liked by a good percentage of people here in Australia," Braithwaite says. "She got to experience that herself when she sang it at [Byron Bay Bluesfest] and she couldn't believe how people sang it. She was flabbergasted.
"We did talk about what would be the attraction of it, she doesn't know either."
This year, on Sunday February 16, Braithwaite would again experience the power of 'The Horses' when the 75,000 strong crowd belted the lyrics back at him during his Fire Fight 2020 performance.
"To have all the people singing back is just sensation, you get goosebumps, even now. It's lovely," he said.
