Cruel tweets written about Barry Humphries have resurfaced following the comedy legends death.
Entertainment reporter Peter Ford took the opportunity on Saturday night, soon after news had broken about Humphries’ death, to share a tweet made by Australian feminist comedian Hannah Gadsby.
In 2018, Gadsby wrote: “Barry Humphries loves those who hold power, hates vulnerable minorities and has completely lost the ability to read the room. That’s not a comedian, that’s an irrelevant, inhumane dick biscuit of the highest order.”
Gadsby rose to prominence after Netflix released a film version of her comedy show Nanette.
She also won the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Barry Award for the same show — an award named after Humphries.
In 2019, Gadsby was among a number of former winners who campaigned for the award to be renamed after Humphries made multiple contentious comments about transgender people.
Ford shared Gadsby’s tweet but added the comment: “Comedy is subjective, we don’t all find the same things funny. Hannah is entitled to her opinion.
“However my view is that I understand Hannah identifies as being funny but Barry actually WAS funny.
“I hope she feels proud of the charge she led against a then 84-year-old man.”
Ford copped criticism in the comments for his timing.
“Why would you bring this up now? It was five years ago. She hasn’t engaged in commentary around him since his death. You’re not engaging in good faith conversation around the issue or mourning Barry Humphries. You’re just looking for a fight and trying to embarrass a good person,” user @eamsmurphs wrote back.
Ford doubled down on his tweet saying “It’s my job to discuss his entire legacy and a valid part of that is people who attempted to damage it. That’s just being fair and accurate.”
“It’s a relevant part of the story. To be dismissed by current ‘hot’ comedians when he was in his 80s broke his heart.”
When Gadsby accepted the Barry award in 2017, she said she respected Humphries as a comedian, but didn’t agree with this statements.
Gadsby has not responded to Ford’s tweets.
Humphries died aged 89 after becoming ill due to complications from hip surgery after a career spanning 70 years.
He passed away on Saturday evening surrounded by his immediate family, including his wife of 30 years Lizzie Spender, his children and 10 grandchildren.
