The real reason Meghan refused to attend King’s coronation - Sky News Australia

A close friend of the Sussexes has revealed the reason why Meghan Markle decided to not attend King Charles' coronation in London next month.

Buckingham Palace overnight confirmed Prince Harry will be in attendance to watch his father be crowned in the historic ceremony following Queen Elizabeth II's death.

"Buckingham Palace is pleased to confirm that the Duke of Sussex will attend the coronation service at Westminster Abbey on 6th May," an official statement read.

"The Duchess of Sussex will remain in California with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet."

Rumours are circulating as to why the actress chose to remain in Los Angeles, while her husband will reunite with the royal family amid tensions over the couple's decision to speak out against the institution through a Netflix series and Harry's memoir Spare.

Omid Scobie, a close friend and author of the pair's unauthorised biography Finding Freedom, attempted to dispel the gossip surrounding the former Suits star.

"I understand that Archie's fourth birthday (also on May 6) played a factor in the couple's decision," he wrote to Twitter hours after the announcement.

It had been suggested in the past the mother-of-two would prefer to celebrate their son's birth at their Montecito mansion rather than spend it at the King's coronation.

Mr Scobie added Prince Harry's visit would be "fairly quick".

"Expect it to be a fairly quick trip to the UK for Prince Harry, who will only be attending the coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey."

It is not known if Prince Harry will appear for other celebrations of his father and stepmother's crowning, such as the concert on Sunday which will feature performances from British rock band Queen, Rod Stewart and American singer Diana Ross.

But it will mean Prince Harry will miss his son's fourth birthday.

There were suggestions the decision to crown King Charles and his wife Queen Consort Camilla the same day as their grandchild's birthday was a "snub" to Harry and Meghan.

Royal biographer Katie Nicholl told Sky News Australia the date was a "hopefully happy coincidence" and was not scheduled by officials with malice.

"Having the coronation on Archie's birthday is definitely not a snub,” she said.

"Obviously, a huge amount of planning has to go into an important moment in history, such as a coronation, and the royal calendar is full of anniversaries and birthdays."

A ‘brief trip’: Harry will want to attend coronation with ‘as little fuss as possible’

Buckingham Palace earlier this week revealed new details about the route Their Majesties will take, with millions set to line the streets of London to watch the event.

The King’s Procession will see the couple travel to Westminster from Buckingham Palace in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach, which will be drawn by six Windsor Greys.

The King’s Procession will travel down The Mall after leaving the Centre Gate, moving through Admiralty Arch, down Whitehall and along Parliament Street.

King Charles and Camilla, who will be joined by The Sovereign’s Escort of the Household Cavalry, will then venture around the east and south sides of Parliament Square to Broad Sanctuary.

They will arrive at the Sanctuary of Westminster Abbey for the coronation to begin at Saturday 11am (local time).
