An ambulance carrying the Duke of Edinburgh was seen leaving King Edward VII hospital on Monday morning (local time) after he was loaded in while being shielded from the media by umbrellas.

Buckingham Palace has confirmed the 99-year-old was being transferred to nearby St Bartholomew’s Hospital, which has a specialist heart ward.

“The Duke of Edinburgh was today transferred from King Edward VII’s Hospital to St Bartholomew’s Hospital where doctors will continue to treat him for an infection, as well as undertake testing and observation for a pre-existing heart condition,” the statement said.

The royal is responding to treatment and “remains comfortable”, it added.

Prince Philip, who turns 100 in June, was taken to King Edward VII’s hospital in London on 16 February as a precaution after feeling unwell.

This latest stint in hospital is his longest stay ever.

Philip summoned Charles to hospital

The development comes after it was revealed that Prince Philip would have asked Prince Charles to attend his hospital bedside last week so they could discuss the “future of the royal family”.

The Queen’s former press secretary Dickie Arbiter said that the Duke of Edinburgh would have “requested” his eldest son’s presence at the King Edward VII Hospital in London.

“Look the man is 99, he is in with an infection. My guess is that he will come out, he will walk out and he will go back to Windsor,” Arbiter said.

“But eventually he is going to die and he was just saying to Charles, “one day you are going to be the leading man of the family.”

Prince Charles appeared teary-eyed when he visited his father in hospital in London on Saturday 20 February.

Charles arrived at the hospital, stepping out of a Tesla car wearing a face mask.

His visit lasted less than an hour.

Philip, who turns 100 in June, had been admitted to King Edward VII’s hospital the previous Tuesday as a precautionary measure and he walked unaided into the medical centre.

Charles was the first member of the royal family to visit Philip since he was admitted for observation and rest.

The hospital’s website states visitors will “only be considered in exceptional circumstances”.

It is thought Charles had not seen his father since before Christmas because of the nationwide coronavirus restrictions.

Prince William has since spoken to reporters about his grandfather’s condition - telling media he was “OK”.

“Yes, he’s OK, they’re keeping an eye on him,” William said on a visit to a vaccination centre in eastern England.

Royal reporters said he delivered his message with a wink.

First glimpse of Harry and Meghan’s Oprah interview

American television network CBS has shared a first-look at Oprah Winfrey’s highly-anticipated tell-all interview with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The short clip shows Prince Harry holding hands with wife Meghan Markle at their Californian mansion while he speaks about his late mother, Princess Diana.

“For me, I’m just really relieved to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side, because I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like for her going through this process by herself all those years ago,” Harry tells Winfrey as images of Diana flash across the screen.

“Because It’s been unbelievably tough for the two of us, but at least we have each other,” he continued.

Harry and Meghan’s sit-down with Oprah is set to air in the United States on Sunday March 7, which is midday Monday AEDT.

The 90-minute special will see Winfrey question pregnant Meghan about everything “from stepping into life as a royal, marriage, motherhood, philanthropic work to how she is handling life under intense public pressure,” according to a statement.

Harry will then join the ladies, and the pair will then tell Winfrey about “their move to the United States and their future hopes and dreams for their expanding family.”

Toxic press made Harry leave UK

Meanwhile, Prince Harry has revealed exactly why he stepped back from royal duties.

In an uncharacteristically candid interview with James Corden, Harry said the “toxic” British press had been destroying his mental health, adding he had not walked away from public service.

Last month, Buckingham Palace announced that Queen Elizabeth’s grandson and his American wife Meghan had made a final split with the royal family, and would not be returning as working members and would lose their patronages.

Harry, 36, and Meghan, 39, sent shockwaves through the monarchy in January 2020 when they announced their intention to step back from royal duties and embark on a new life across the Atlantic.

“It was never walking away. It was stepping back rather than stepping down, there was a really difficult environment as I think a lot of people saw,” Harry told Corden, host of the “Late Late Show” while cruising around LA on the top of a tour bus.

“We all know what the British press could be like, and it was destroying my mental health, I was like this is toxic. So I did what any husband and what any father would do is like, I need to get my family out of here.”

Before they moved to California, the couple had complained about the British tabloids’ treatment of Meghan, whose father is white and mother is African-American, some of which they said amounted to bullying or racism.

Earlier this month, Meghan successfully sued one tabloid for breaching her privacy by printing extracts of a letter she wrote to her father while last month Harry won a libel case against the same paper over a story which said he had turned his back on the military.

Critics of the couple, who announced this month they were expecting their second child, have said they are keen for publicity but only on their own terms. An in-depth interview they have given to US chat show host Oprah Winfrey is due to be aired on March 7.

Commentators have said Harry was unhappy with losing his treasured royal patronages, particularly those connected to the military in which he served for 10 years.

“But my life is public service so wherever I am in the world it’s going to be the same thing,” Harry said in the interview.

Harry picks his choice for The Crown

Season four of the royal drama, “The Crown,” gave viewers a brief peek at a young Prince Harry as the plot focused on his parents’ rocky relationship. But there are still two more seasons of the hit series to go, and eventually, they’re going to need a grown-up Harry to tell the whole tale.

And the real Duke of Sussex knows just who should play the part — another noteworthy, London-born redhead.

During an appearance on “The Late Late Show” Thursday night, Harry told host James Corden that his pick is “Homeland” and “Billions” star Damian Lewis. It’s easy to see why when you see them side by side.

But there is one problem casting Lewis as the prince. Harry is just 36 years old, while Lewis is 50. Of course, when compared to Corden’s idea for the part of Harry’s brother, Prince William, that age gap doesn’t seem like much of a hurdle.

After all, Corden, 42, named himself as right for the role.

“I think Damian Lewis as you and me as William, that’s casting,” Corden raved.

Harry responded dryly, noting that, “It’s not great casting, but it is casting.”

All jokes aside, Harry took the opportunity to tell Corden just what he thought about “The Crown” and its portrayal of the British royal family.

“They don’t pretend to be news,” he said of the Netflix show. “It’s fictional, but it’s loosely based on the truth. Of course, it’s not strictly accurate, but loosely, it gives you a rough idea about what that lifestyle, what the pressures of putting duty and service above family and everything else, what can come from that.”
