Prince Harry and Meghan interview LIVE updates: Couple confirm they are having a baby girl; Archie’s skin colour sparked concerns before he was born, Duchess of Sussex reveals - The Sydney Morning Herald

Summary

  • Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, have sat down with Oprah Winfrey for the biggest royal interview since Princess Diana’s famous 1995 tell-all with the BBC’s Panorama program that airs on CBS, Sunday night in the US (about midday AEDT).
  • The duke and duchess resigned as working members of the royal family in January 2020 and relocated to Montecito, California, where they have effectively embarked on a commercial enterprise, signing lucrative deals with Spotify, Netflix, Disney and, setting the stage for the explosive TV interview, Winfrey’s production company Harpo.
  • The Queen has spoken of “selfless dedication to duty” in a Commonwealth Day message broadcast in the UK just hours before the tell-all television interview airs in the US.
  • The 94-year-old monarch will be briefed on the couple’s encounter with the American talkshow host when she wakes at Windsor Castle on Monday morning UK time but reportedly has no intention of watching it. Meanwhile, Prince Philip has spent his 19th night in hospital after contracting an infection and undergoing heart surgery.
  • Sources say William and Catherine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, privately remain “hopeful of a reconciliation” with their brother and sister-in-law despite the prospect of criticism in the Oprah interview.

Harry says he did not blindside the Queen, but Prince Charles stopped taking his calls

By Bevan Shields

Harry says he wasn’t prepared for how the UK press would treat Meghan and says race was a factor in the coverage.

“It takes living in her shoes for a day to see where it was going to go and how far they were going to take it.”

He says he asked for calm from the tabloids as a boyfriend, husband and then father and didn’t get it.

The couple decided to leave because of the press but also the lack of support from the royal family.

Oprah asked: “Did you blindside the Queen?”

“No, I have never blindsided my grandmother. I have too much respect for her,” Harry replies.

Harry reveals he had three conversations with the Queen and some with Prince Charles “before he stopped taking my calls”.

Why did he do that, Oprah asks?

“Because by that point I took matters into my own hands. I’ve got to do something for my own mental health, for my wife’s, and for Archie as well.”

What about the baby girl’s title?

There has been much discussion about Archie’s title.

Marlene Koenig, the author of Queen Victoria’s Descendants, says Meghan and Harry’s daughter will be known as Lady.

‘Did you blindside the Queen?’

The couple’s announcement in 2018 that they were resigning as members of the Royal Family was a major misstep from which we are still seeing fallout.

The initial statement was reported to have been made without consulting the Queen, and it claimed the Sussexes would “carve out a progressive new role within this institution ... work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen”.

The statement forced a family meeting, referred to as the Sandringham Summit, in January 2020. After the meeting the Queen issued a statement saying “very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family” had taken place.

Under the exit agreement, however, almost nothing flagged in their first statement came to pass. The couple would in effect exit “the institution”, repay the £2.4 million ($4.3 million) renovation cost of Frogmore Cottage and pay a commercial rent to retain it as a London home and would not be permitted to carry out any duties on behalf of the Queen.

They also lost their use of the style of Royal Highness, and Harry was also forced to surrender his military appointments, including the post of Captain General of the Royal Marines. The couple also agreed to give up their royal patronages though they retain private patronages, such as Harry’s stewardship of the Invictus Games.

Harry says he and his wife were in pain, but denied help

By Bevan Shields

Harry is asked whether he had “blindsided” the Queen by announcing last year that the couple would leave the royal family.

He says he and Meghan asked for help before making the decision, but didn’t get it.

They are arguing that they wanted to stay as working royals, but do less work given they were “in a lot of pain”.

Meghan says they even suggested moving to New Zealand to do this lesser level of work.

Meghan and Harry say they were denied security

By Bevan Shields

Oprah draws out Harry and Meghan on their move to California.

Harry says they moved to California from Canada because their British-government supplied security was to be withdrawn.

Why, Oprah asks?

“Their justification was a change in status. To which I pushed back and said ‘was there a change in threat and risk?’.”

He says the risk hadn’t changed but because they weren’t official members of the royal family they weren’t entitled to security.

This was an issue first raised when the couple decided to split from the royal family in January 2020.

It’s a girl!

With her husband by her side, Meghan reveals the couple are expecting a baby girl!

“To have any child would have been amazing. But to have a boy and then a girl? What more could you ask for?” Harry says.

They say they don’t plan to have any more children after this. They will be a family of four, plus their two dogs.

Meghan says she’s lost her father, and her name

By Bevan Shields

Oprah says: “You’ve said some pretty shocking things here.”

Meghan says it’s just what happened, and adds that she’s not going to live her life in fear.

“I don’t know how they could expect that, after all of this time, we would just still be silent while there is an active role that the Firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us.”

Meghan says she has lost her [estranged] father and her name.

The lonely palace

By Michael Idato

Meghan is talking about the loneliness of living in a palace.

She’s also talking about how unhelpful she found the interior machinery of the palace. And as peculiar as that sounds, it’s something that has been raised by royal brides in the past, such as Diana, Princess of Wales, and Sarah, Duchess of York.

Back in 1996, the Duchess of York - Sarah Ferguson, who was married to Prince Andrew between 1986 and 1996, and is the mother of Princess Eugenie - took a seat in Oprah Winfrey’s confessional and spoke about her grim fairytale life and the lashing she received from the British press.

In that interview, Fergie spoke about dealing with the human machinery of the Royal Family, right down to the maximum wattage of bulbs she was permitted to put in lamps.

“You didn’t marry the fairytale, you married a man,” Fergie said at the time. “You fell in love and married a man, and then you have to come to terms with the fairytale. Now it’s not a fairy tale, it’s real life - well, they think it’s real life over there.”

Fergie also spoke of how hard she found media coverage of her activities.

“Completely and utterly cruel and abusive and so invasive,” she said. “It is very cruel and very painful when you are going to try and find the feelings within, to be on such a public stage.”

‘I was weeping’: Meghan speaks of private pain at public engagements

By Bevan Shields

Meghan says she didn’t want to go to an event but was too scared to be left alone given the state of her mental health.

She says she and Harry were smiling and doing their job at the event but “every time the lights went down in the royal box I was weeping”.

Nobody should have to go through that, Oprah says.

“It takes so much courage to admit that you need help. It took so much courage to voice that. I didn’t want to put more weight on my husband’s shoulders. He’s already carrying the weight of the world.”
