Meghan Markle's estranged father, Thomas Markle, says he does not think royal family is racist - ABC News

Thomas Markle says he does not think the royal family is racist and he hopes an alleged remark from a family member about the darkness of the skin of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex's son was just a dumb question.

Meghan said her son Archie, now aged one, had been denied the title of prince because there were concerns within the royal family about "about how dark his skin might be when he's born".

"I have great respect for the royals and I don't think the British royal family are racist at all," Mr Markle told UK broadcaster ITV.

"I don't think the British are racist. I think Los Angeles is racist, California is racist, but I don't think the Brits are."

"The thing about what colour will the baby be or how dark will the baby be, I'm guessing and hoping it's just a dumb question from somebody, you know, it could just be that simple.

"It could be somebody asked a stupid question rather than being a total racist."

"This whole thing about colour and how dark the baby is bullshit," Mr Markle added.

However he said the alleged comment should be investigated.

Mr Markle and his daughter have been estranged since her marriage to Prince Harry in 2018.

Mr Markle, a former lighting director for US TV soaps and sitcoms, pulled out of the wedding days beforehand after undergoing heart surgery.

He said his daughter had let him down while he was ill.

"I also feel that she let me down," Mr Markle said.

"I was in a hospital bed the last time we talked and I never heard from them again — they didn't care if I died."

Asked about the interview Meghan and Harry gave to Oprah Winfrey, Mr Markle said, "They went way over the top," and should have waited, considering Prince Philip was in hospital.

"They should have waited considering the Queen's age and [Prince] Philip's age," he said.

Meanwhile, a senior executive at broadcaster ITV has spoken to presenter Piers Morgan about his criticism of Meghan, the chief executive of the company said.

Morgan has long criticised the couple, saying they have damaged the royal family and sought publicity on their own terms, without the scrutiny that comes with the job.

ITV chief executive Carolyn McCall told reporters the executive had spoken to Morgan in recent days about his comments, including that he thought Meghan was exaggerating her struggles with her mental health.
