Meghan Markle personally complained to ITV about Piers Morgan - NEWS.com.au

While it wasn’t always the case, divisive Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan has spent the years since Meghan Markle married Prince Harry repeatedly attacking her.

Once describing the 39-year-old as “perfect princess material”, after Meghan allegedly “ghosted” Morgan, he quickly changed his tune, branding the Duchess of Sussex a “shameless piece of work”, criticising her for her reported intention to “fight for feminism”.

In the days since the Sussexes’ interview with Oprah, Morgan doubled down on his attacks, deeming the tell-all a “nauseating two-hour whine-athon” and “disgraceful diatribe of cynical race-baiting propaganda designed to damage the Queen as her husband lies in hospital and destroy the monarchy”.

On Tuesday, he once again blasted the couple, casting doubt on Meghan’s confession that she struggled with suicidal ideation while a senior royal – only for him to be called out for it by co-host Alex Beresford and storm off the set. It was then announced that Morgan had “decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain”.

Every single one of the 55-year-old’s rants have been met with radio silence from Meghan. But Morgan’s attack on Tuesday proved to be his last (on live television, at least) – all thanks to a sly move from the former Suits star.

After the show, Meghan reportedly filed a formal complaint to British broadcaster ITV, concerning “the impact Morgan’s comments could have on others and how it could degrade the seriousness of mental health issues”, the network’s Royal Editor Chris Ship revealed.

In her candid chat with Oprah, Meghan – currently pregnant with her and Prince Harry’s second child – revealed she had been “ashamed” to admit she needed help, saying there was a “breaking point” when she “just didn’t want to be alive anymore”.

“That was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought,” she said.

“I share this because there’s so many people who are afraid to voice that they need help. And I know personally how hard it is to – not just hard it is when your voice is silenced, to be told no … This was emails, begging for help, saying very specifically I am concerned for my mental welfare … Nothing was ever done. So we had to find a solution.”

The complaint, believed to have been sent to the broadcaster’s chief executive Carolyn McCall, allegedly did not apply to the personal nature of Morgan’s attacks.

It was one of more than 41,000 sent to ITV in the wake of Morgan’s comments.

Questioned by reporters on the issue this morning while walking his daughter to school, Morgan doubled down on his stance, boldly confirming he would “re-emerge” and claiming people were simply trying to cancel him.

“I believe in freedom of speech, I believe in the right to be allowed to have an opinion. If people want to believe Meghan Markle, that’s entirely their right,” Morgan said.

“I don’t believe almost anything that comes out of her mouth and I think the damage she’s done to the British monarchy and to the Queen at a time when Prince Philip is lying in hospital is enormous and frankly contemptible.

“If I have to fall on my sword for expressing an honestly held opinion about Meghan Markle and that diatribe of bilge that she came out with in that interview, so be it.”

WHAT PROMPTED PIERS MORGAN’S HATRED OF MEGHAN?

Setting aside accusations that Morgan is simply racist and a misogynist, the pair do have a history.

In his column for the Mail Online, the former tabloid newspaper editor wrote that Meghan sent him a direct message on Twitter in 2015, after he followed her and her fellow Suits cast members.

The two supposedly then corresponded regularly for the next year-and-a-half, The Mirror reports, discussing the show, Meghan’s United Nations trip to Rwanda, spinning classes and calligraphy, before meeting at Morgan’s local pub in Kensington, west London, in June 2016 – where Morgan claimed Meghan first met Harry.

Morgan described Meghan as an “old mate” on GMB in 2017, adding: “We had 90 minutes in my local pub over a dirty martini and a pint of hand pumped Harvey’s.

“Trust me, I’ll be milking that 90 minutes if she becomes our princess for the rest of my days.”

He said they were “great buddies” and revealed he was pushing for Prince Harry to propose to her.

However, Morgan also claims that after their meet-up, Meghan went to a private members club to see Prince Harry and then “went cold”, with the pair never speaking again.

“She met Prince Harry at the dinner that night, went on a solo date with him the next night, and I never heard from her again. Not a word. I’d been ghosted,” he said.
