Buckingham Palace says it will investigate allegations Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, bullied staff during her time as a royal in London.
Key points:
- The Times newspaper reported a complaint was made by an adviser over the Duchess of Sussex in October 2018
- It is alleged Meghan bullied several royal household staff during her time at Kensington Palace
- Harry and Meghan will appear in an Oprah Winfrey interview special next week
It comes after The Times newspaper reported on Tuesday that Meghan had faced a bullying complaint from a close adviser during her time living at Kensington Palace with Prince Harry.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace said it was "clearly very concerned" about the allegations in the newspaper "following claims made by former staff of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex".
"Accordingly our HR [human resources] team will look into the circumstances outlined in the article. Members of staff involved at the time, including those who have left the household, will be invited to participate to see if lessons can be learned.
"The royal household has had a dignity at work policy in place for a number of years and does not and will not tolerate bullying or harassment in the workplace."
The Times reported Jason Knauf, the communications secretary for the Sussexes, made a formal complaint that Meghan had allegedly forced two personal assistants out of the royal household.
The Duchess allegedly undermined the confidence of a third staff member, it was reported.
The newspaper said it had been approached by unnamed royal sources who "wished to tell their side" of the two years Meghan spent as a working royal after marrying Prince Harry in May 2018.
The couple shocked the royal family by stepping back from their roles in March last year and moving to the United States with their baby son Archie.
The Sussexes' lawyers told The Times they were the victims of "a calculated smear campaign based on misleading and harmful information".
Meghan's personal spokesman said in a statement that the Duchess was "saddened by this latest attack on her character, particularly as someone who has been the target of bullying herself and is deeply committed to supporting those who have experienced pain and trauma".
"She is determined to continue her work building compassion around the world and will keep striving to set an example for doing what is right and doing what is good."
The allegations come ahead of Harry and Meghan's highly anticipated interview with talk host Oprah Winfrey, which is set to air on US network CBS on March 8.
LoadingIt is the first TV interview the couple have given since making their homes in California last year.
The couple announced last month that they are expecting their second child.
