'It's everyone versus racism': AFL stars step up to support Black Lives Matter movement - Wide World of Sports

Several of the AFL's biggest names have stepped up to participate in the global protests against racism, partaking in the Black Lives Matter movement on social media.

The senseless killing of George Floyd, an African-American man who died after a Minnesota police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes, has sparked outrage all over the United States and throughout the world.

Protests have now taken place in all 52 states in the USA and have extended to international cities such as London and Perth.

As a form of solidarity against police brutality on social media, an initiative called Blackout Tuesday has taken place, which encourages users to post a simple black square and to refrain from posting their usual content for the day.

AFL stars such as Lance Franklin, Patrick Dangerfield, Max Gawn, Shaun Burgoyne and Marcus Bontempelli all took part in the global social media initiative.

Franklin noted in his caption that the incident which resulted in Floyd's death is not something that is restricted to the United States, rather something that occurs on our own shores.

"Justice for all," he wrote.

"What's happening in the US is happening on our own soil and all around the world.

"Thoughts and prayers are with George Floyd's family and all affected by this tragedy and the tragedies before his murder (black, yellow and red hearts)."

West Coast star Nic Naitanui also took to Twitter to identify the problem with those responding to the Black Lives Matter movement by saying "All Lives Matter".

"All love from my end but 'Saying all lives matter is like going to a cancer fundraiser and saying there are other diseases'," he tweeted.

"Yes every life matters and is of equal importance/significance but right now we are highlighting black lives.

"That's just my opinion as a black man."

Naitanui's comments came after Indigenous Saints star Brad Hill showed support to fellow Indigenous star Chad Wingard, who announced he would partake in a self-imposed media ban due to biased coverage of discrimination both in Australia and abroad.

"At the end of the day, you have your own decision. If that's what Chad wants to do, I respect his decision," he said on Tuesday.

"I can't do nothing about that. If that is the way he feels, that is his opinion.

"It is pretty bad what is going on over there but it is a different part of the world. It does affect people. Like I said, it is pretty bad what is going on but it's not black versus whites. It's everyone versus racism.

"It's something that is getting better over here but it's still stuff that does go on and can get better.

"Some of the stuff that you watch, does hit you at the heart sometimes. It's not the greatest thing you want to see."

Wingard has pledged to do his own media work due to a lack of trust in the Australian media (AAP)

Wingard tweeted on Monday that he would no longer do interviews that weren't a part of his contract with the Hawks.

"I don't trust our media anymore!" he wrote.

"Until things change I won't be doing any interviews I'm not contracted to do!

"I'll be sharing my own thoughts and content!"

Wingard has since been extremely active on his social media accounts, promoting methods through which Australians can support Aboriginal lives.
