Legendary British filmmaker Richard Curtis has apologised for his portrayal of women in films such as Bridget Jones’s Diary and Love Actually.
The writer and director apologised for labelling characters such as Jones as chubby while being interviewed by his daughter Scarlett.
The British screenwriter acknowledged that jokes about women’s weight “aren’t any longer funny”, and also slammed the lack of non-white representation in his films such as Notting Hill.
Curtis was responding to questions from his daughter during an appearance at The Times and Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival when he addressed criticism about his previous portrayal of women.
“I remember how shocked I was five years ago when Scarlett said to me, ‘You can never use the word ‘fat’ again.’ Wow, you were right. In my generation calling someone chubby [was funny] — in Love Actually there were jokes about that,” he said.
“Those jokes aren’t any longer funny.”
Curtis’ films have faced rising criticism in recent years, especially Bridget Jones’ Diary.
Renée Zellweger’s character is constantly criticised for her appearance labelled chubby in the film, despite weighing about 60kg.
Similarly, in Love Actually, Natalie, played by Martine McCutcheon, is regularly referred to as “the chubby girl”.
But size representation hasn’t been the only issues that have arisen in conversation about the classic rom-coms.
Love Actually follows numerous storylines about people in love. However, the cast is overwhelmingly white, much like in Curtis’ other films from that era.

“Yes, I wish I’d been ahead of the curve,” he continued, when asked about the lack of diversity in his previous projects.
“Because I came from a very undiverse school and bunch of university friends, I think that I’ve hung on, on the diversity issue, to the feeling that I wouldn’t know how to write those parts. I think I was just sort of stupid and wrong about that.”
Meanwhile, it was revealed this week that Curtis had finally tied the knot with his partner, Emma Freud, after 33 years together.
