One contestant on The Bachelor gets so bored on Wednesday night that she quits the competition and craps off entirely, only hours after publicly trashing the reputation of the show’s popular frontrunner.
She may vacate the mansion but she leaves a trail of destruction. Why exactly does she leave? She tells us she’s just not having fun anymore.
It says a lot when spearheading a character assassination fails to put a spring in your step.
JAMES WEIR RECAPS: Read all the recaps here
In an attempt to lift the ratings, producers have been studying old Married At First Sight episodes to see if they can steal some of the popular rival’s tricks. They end up blatantly ripping off an iconic MAFS tool: The Sledge Box.
Now, The Sledge Box is how we colloquially refer to what is officially known as The Honesty Box. The rules? Everyone anonymously writes down a question or statement directed at someone else in the room and pops it into the box. The notes are then publicly read out over a drunken dinner. Because of the anonymity, the box just ends up getting filled with passive aggressive insults — and this, friends, is why we call it The Sledge Box. It’s brilliant. I’m gonna have sledge boxes on all the tables at my funeral wake.
To make things more dramatic, producers ban Jimmy from attending and instead invite his sister and cousin to take part in the toxic game.
The camera cuts to Stephanie looking evil and we know exactly what’s going to happen here.
“The target of the box is Holly,” she snips. “It might as well just be titled Holly Sucks.”
A question is plucked out and read aloud, asking everyone to name the girls in the mansion who are acting differently in front of Jimmy and the cameras. Stephanie sends her minion Tatum into battle.
“Holly, I feel like you are quite different behind closed doors,” she declares across the table. “And, when Jimmy’s around, I feel like you’re a different version. There’s been moments where I’ve been talking and you’ve just cut over the top of me. It’s offended me.”
It’s a punch to the guts for Holly. She’s still recovering from the C-word scandal. Now that the missile has been fired, she softly begins to respond to the allegations. But then Tatum cuts over the top of her — probably just giving her a taste of her own medicine. That’s gotta be it. Tatum doesn’t seem rude at all.
“Behind closed doors, I feel like you haven’t been that nice,” Tatum continues. “And then, when Jimmy is here, (you’re) wanting to be the centre of attention and be front and centre. And I can’t compete with that. So I kinda thought, are you here for the right reasons?”
We all breathe a sigh of relief — thankful that Tatum has finally gotten a chance to be the centre of attention. Incredibly brave. And she’s not ready to leave the spotlight. When all Holly’s mates come to her defence and deny the allegations, Tatum finds another reason to get front and centre.
“It’s absolutely mind-boggling to see how different Holly is behind closed doors. It makes me feel uncomfortable and I’m quite over the fake facade,” she says.
The waves keep crashing and knocking Holly down. She finally finds the courage to speak up.
“That is a little bit of character assassination,” she says. “We’ve never spoken to each other, I don’t know you-”
“Yeah, we’ve never had a proper conversation because I do feel extremely judged by you,” Tatum interrupts.
While all this unfolds, Jimmy’s sister and cousin sit in silence at the head of the table, no doubt burning with humiliation that they have to be involved in this ridiculous situation on national television.
The sister and cousin have heard enough. With Holly’s reputation completely destroyed by Tatum’s slanderous allegations, they pull Jimmy aside and cut to the truth. The sister’s a psychologist, so we totally trust that she will have identified the toxic and manipulative behaviour and defend Holl-
“Other girls have said they can really struggle with Holly — she can be dismissive, make them feel their voices aren’t heard,” she informs Jimmy. “I don’t think it’d work long-term.”
Welp, we tried. It was nice knowing you, Holly.
So many lies and rumours have been hurled around tonight. When we finally arrive at the cocktail party, it’s just so nice to hear someone say something truthful.
“I’m just really happy to be here — it’s a really nice evening, I look sexy AF. This is my best look to date,” Sierah states.
Never has a truer word been spoken in this goddamn mansion.
In an attempt to keep us hooked, producers orchestrate for Steph to be summoned to Jimmy’s house before the cocktail party. The purpose? Unknown. We don’t see footage and Steph refuses to divulge the details when she finally arrives on the patio, tacky red champagne flute in hand. Did producers succeed at keeping us hooked? No. This whole thing’s getting tedious and we repeatedly check the clock to see how much longer we have to wait until Osher is wheeled out of the garage and plugged into the wall of the rose ceremony room for the elimination.
In a flurry of action, Jimmy pulls Holly away and basically makes her apologise for being mean to Tatum. Just accept it Holly: You’re now the villain.
Tatum’s still feeling raw and vulnerable after bravely confronting Holly. And when she gets told she’ll have to wait in line behind another girl to talk to Jimmy, it’s the final straw.
“I just wouldn’t shut somebody down like that,” she says, just hours after publicly shutting down Holly over dinner in front of Jimmy’s family. “I’m someone who really feels energy and there’s a lot of negative energy in this house that’s really affecting me. I’m over the behaviour. It’s so fake, I’m over the girls here.”
Mmmhmmm. Mmhhhm. Yep. Definitely a lot of negative energy around you, Tatum.
She marches over to Jimmy and interrupts his private conversation — almost knocking another girl into the nearby koi pond.
“So I feel like I’ve sort of been here long enough to know how I feel. For me, I just don’t wanna be in this environment anymore,” she tells him. “I think you’re an amazing guy and have amazing qualities. I think, at this point, I’d like to go home. I just feel like I wouldn’t be true to myself if I stayed here any longer.”
Wow. We’ll miss Tatum and her wallflower ways — always shying away from the spotlight, never wanting to be the centre of attention. We’re so impressed at how dignified and classy she has been while making this decision: by destroying Holly’s life, derailing a cocktail party, dumping The Bachelor and then marching out through the backyard without saying goodbye to anyone.
The mansion’s just not the right place for a shrinking violet.
