Episode 2 recap: 'Rookie hour' fails to rattle the Faves and Scott Cam drops a bombshell no plans twist - Nine Shows

Hold onto your hard hats, The Block just got serious. Faves Mitch and Mark and Ronnie and Georgia are finally on site, which means the competition can officially kick off.

And it certainly does as alliances start to form early, particularly when Tanya and Kirsty clash over who gets to keep furniture and décor from the House Decider challenge.

But there's an even bigger shock in store for our teams when it's revealed there are no plans for the houses. It's up to the contestants to design their own floor plans, all while preparing to deliver a Guest Bedroom by the end of the week.

Before that twist blindsides them, the Fans have to choose their houses. Somehow without any arguing or disappointment, everyone gets what they want.

Kirsty and Jesse, as challenge winners, pick first and select House 5, the only two-storey property. Josh and Luke take House 4, while Tanya and Vito pick House 3.

The Fans then get to decide which houses the Faves will have, supposedly to "even-out the playing field" for the inexperienced newbies.

But it's clear from the Fans' attempt at using strategy to rattle the returnees, they've got a long way to go before they reach Mitch and Mark and Ronnie and Georgia style game-play.

The Fans give Ronnie and Georgia House 1, because the busy street front location is likely to make the property less valuable to buyers. And thinking Mitch and Mark only ever renovate with the one design style in mind, they give them House 2 because of its Queen Anne heritage façade.

"Mitch and Mark probably will suffer more in House 2 because they like very jazzy, very modern, they have a really unique style, and with some of those heritage features in that home they might find it a bit more difficult, it's not really in their area of expertise," Josh explains.

That could be one very big mistake. Firstly it means the Faves are next-door neighbours, and can strategise and share resources. Plus, Mitch and Mark are experienced renovators and have only done a mid-century modern style property once — on the Oslo season of The Block in 2019.

"To get that house, I think it's really given us a bit of a direction because of that Federation front... we've done 19 non-mid-century modern [renovations]. We design houses to suit the property, to suit the location and to suit the demographic," Mitch says.

Adds Georgia, "I call that rookie hour."

"It might be a bit of them... and us," Mitch suggests.

Just when the Faves thought they had the edge on the Fans, host Scott Cam delivers one of the most intriguing twists The Block has had in years. For the first time in the show's history there are no plans — unless you count the children's style house drawing the news was revealed in, but that wouldn't get you very far.

While the plans are up to the teams, they do have to build within a floor plate because that's already been approved by council. In that space, they have to fit every room you'd expect to see in a house renovated on The Block.

Everyone reacts differently to the news. Mitch and Mark are unfazed because Mark is a planning whiz and he gets right on it, while Mitch goes shopping.

Ronnie and Georgia are ever-so slightly rattled and have different opinions about where to start. Ronnie wants to start working on the Guest Bedroom straight away, while Georgia wants to nut out the plan first and figure out where each room will go.

"I was like 'You don't understand, you have to figure out the floor plan because that affects where the room's going to go. If you just plonk a room there now we're really limited to what else is going to be around it'," Georgia tells Ronnie.

Ronnie responds, "I get it, but we had to make a start."

As for the Fans, Kirsty and Jesse's builder is all over it and gets straight to work.

Josh and Luke, meanwhile, have their hearts set on a fourth bedroom because it will add value for buyers. This means they want to use the space set for a garage as the fourth room in a move they suggest is a "game-changer".

While Vito isn't happy there aren't any plans to work off, he and Tanya are taking advantage of the three bedrooms that were previously set up in House 3 for the House Decider challenge.

Those spaces will remain designated bedrooms, and they intend to work off Kirsty and Jesse's winning challenge bedroom for their Guest Bedroom.

And in case you thought there was a lack of drama this episode, don't worry, because Tanya and Vito's decision to keep Kirsty and Jesse's bed from the challenge, leads to simmering tension on site.

"That was an awkward conversation and I still felt bad. We hugged it out and we were fine," Tanya recalls.

The issue wasn't completely put in the past though, with Tanya airing her frustrations to the twins, who already weren't happy with Kirsty after she reminded them they weren't following Block rules during the House Decider challenge.

"I'm done with them too. I'm off Kirsty and Jesse, I want them off my site. I don't want to see them, if they're going to be rude they can stay on their side..." Luke tells Tanya.

Once the venting is finished, Tanya and Vito get back to work and talk turns to their plans to use Kirsty and Jesse's challenge room for their Guest Bedroom.

It piqued Faves Ronnie and Mitch's interest, who wondered how Vito was so clean on demolition-heavy day one. Though Tanya and Vito's idea seems clever, Ronnie proved once again why he is an All Star.

"You've got to understand in those 48-hour challenges the rooms are not done to spec, they're not done correctly. They're literally just on there with bubblegum. If he's reusing that and it doesn't have insulation they're going to have problems," he warns.

Already there are alliances building and a clear difference between the Fans and Faves' strategies. And it's only day one.
