James Weir: It’s official, The Bachelor is dead - NEWS.com.au

I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing. It was about halfway through Wednesday night’s episode, Osher was making all the contestants take part in a challenge where they had to fashion superhero costumes out of Lycra leotards and a communal hot glue gun — and I had just gone into the bathroom to clean my exhaust fan.

The particular kind of boredom you feel while watching the latest series of the Channel 10 franchise is unique. There have been times I’ve considered jamming a pair of scissors into a power point, just to feel something again. It’s so tedious that, instead of watching it, I’d rather spend an hour teaching old people how to scan QR codes.

The ratings are reflecting this. This week, the series dipped to its lowest point ever, with just 360,000 metro viewers tuning in to watch Wednesday’s episode.

A C-word scandal was supposed to boost the following night’s ratings. Only 369,000 metro viewers tuned in. Ooft.

C-word scandals have become the hot trend for reality shows in recent years. It all started when Channel 9’s Married At First Sight featured a husband using the slur to describe his verbally abusive wife. It attracted a tsunami of viewer complaints and an online petition calling for one of the show’s dating experts to be fired. The episode generated headlines and think pieces and talkback radio segments. More than a million Aussies tuned in.

A few weeks later, ABC News Breakfast host Michael Rowland dubbed the controversial series “the absolute cesspit of TV”. In the world of commercial TV programming, that’s considered a glowing review.

Two years ago, The Bachelor decided to put their own spin on a C-word scandal, with one contestant allegedly dubbing suitor Matt Agnew a “dog c**t”. This also caused a lot of buzz. Mainly because of the extra creative flair added to the insult — it wasn’t just your run-of-the-mill C-word scandal.

It was no surprise when this week’s C-word scandal on The Bachelor fizzled before it flamed. What happened? One girl uttered the insult about another girl behind her back and then the expletive got bandied about a handful of times. Big whoop.

As the old saying goes: If one girl calls another girl the C-word in a tacky mansion and no one tunes in to watch it, did it even happen?

Producers haven’t learnt anything from the C-word scandals of yore. Those scandals had an X-factor. A certain je ne sais quoi, if you will.

In 2021, we expect more nuance and imagination from our offensive insults.

In court this week, a former Channel 7 sport reporter lost his defamation case against media outlets for misquoting him as saying he would slit a colleague’s throat when he had actually threatened to rip the staffer’s head off and “sh*t down (his) throat”.

Boom. Now that’s an insult. No wonder we didn’t even bat an eye at The Bachelor’s petty name-calling. Been there, done that.

The Bachelor has never blitzed the ratings. Our local version of the international franchise has always been a bit uneven over its nine-year run.

It first hit screens in 2013 with chiropractor-turned-Neighbours star Tim Robards as the suitor and premiered to about 669,000 metro viewers.

There have been spikes over the years. The third and fourth seasons — fronted by personal trainer Sam Wood and rope access technician Richie Strahan — hovered between 800,000 and 900,000 metro viewers each episode.

The show got another burst of life in 2018 when former rugby star Nick “The Honey Badger” Cummins signed up. In the space of eight weeks, Australia watched him go from hero to villain after he refused to choose either of the remaining girls in the finale.

But the glory days of The Bachelor are gone.

It’s not the first time a network’s tent-pole show has died. My Kitchen Rules was the unbeatable juggernaut for years before Married At First Sight overtook it in the ratings. Then it got canned. We’ve seen it happen with all those shiny floor talent shows.

Same with Big Brother. It has died and come back to life many times. The latest iteration on Seven has been somewhat of a success for the network and led to a celebrity version of the series that’s set to air later this year, with contestants including Caitlyn Jenner and Meghan Markle’s weird half-brother.

Give The Bachelor a rest for a year or two and then try bringing it back. Maybe then it can steal the crown and win the title of being the absolute cesspit of TV.

Lady Gaga stuns in House of Gucci trailer - NEWS.com.au

Lady Gaga has unleashed her inner femme fatale in the upcoming biographical drama House of Gucci.

From the looks of the two-minute teaser that dropped over the weekend, calling the film “scandalous” would be an understatement.

Academy Award-winner Lady Gaga, 35, stars alongside Adam Driver, 37, in this drama-filled story about the shocking 1995 murder of Italian fashion mogul Maurizio Gucci, played by Driver, which was orchestrated by his ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani (Gaga).

Based on the Sara Gay Forden book, The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed, the film reveals the ups and downs of their marriage and the events that led to his death.

Decked out in designer suits in the trailer, actors Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons and Al Pacino can be seen schmoozing with the rest of the Gucci clan, including Reggiani confidante Pina Auriemma, played by Salma Hayek.

The 49-year-old Leto is transformed into Paolo Gucci, a man in his 60s, with heavy makeup and what appear to be prosthetics to achieve an aged look.

Driver, meanwhile, channels a full-on corporate businessman as Maurizio, puffing cigarettes and sporting slicked-back hair.

Gaga, who hasn’t appeared in a film since her feature debut in 2018’s A Star is Born, dresses the part of a vindictive ex-wife, donning fur coats, flashy jewellery and a fluffy, ’80s-esque hairstyle.

RELATED: First look at Lady Gaga, Adam Driver in House of Gucci

She narrates the trailer in a heavy, impeccable Italian accent, calling the Gucci empire “synonymous with wealth, style, power” while also pointing out that the name is “cursed.”

Gloomy shots of the couple’s wedding, emotional arguments and arrests are teased. There are later glimpses of a hit man trailing Maurizio Gucci, building suspense around his inevitable assassination.

“You picked a real firecracker,” Paolo tells Maurizio, referring to Patrizia — who, in an eerie scene, repeatedly hits her spoon against a cup of coffee she’s drinking.

“I don’t consider myself to be a particularly ethical person,” the transfixed Patrizia says. “But I am fair.”

Taking place primarily in Italy, as well as New York, the film is overwhelmingly Italian, featuring characters riding Vespas, drinking cappuccinos and embracing Catholicism.

After being convicted for the planned murder of her ex-husband in 1998, the real-life Patrizia Reggiani was dubbed the “Black Widow” during the case’s widespread media coverage.

The Italian socialite served an 18-year prison sentence and was released in 2016 for “good behaviour.”

The real-life subjects of the film aren’t fans of having their personal lives used for the sake of entertainment. Patrizia Gucci, a second cousin of Maurizio, told the Associated Press that the book the movie is based on is riddled with inaccuracies.

“My grandfather [Aldo Gucci] was a very handsome man, like all the Guccis, and very tall, blue eyes and very elegant,” she said. “He is being played by Al Pacino, who is not very tall already, and this photo shows him as fat, short, with sideburns, really ugly. Shameful, because he doesn’t resemble him at all.”

“I still feel offended,” she said, calling Leto’s portrayal of Paolo Gucci “horrible.”

The family will still be watching, though. Patrizia said they would decide whether or not to take further action after seeing the film themselves.

Ridley Scott is directing and producing the film, with Becky Johnston and Roberto Bentivegna penning the screenplay.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ House of Gucci will be released in theatres on November 24.

Gerard Butler suing Olympus Has Fallen producers, film companies for $13 million - NEWS.com.au

Gerard Butler is suing the producers — including parent companies Nu Image and Millennium Films — of his 2013 film Olympus Has Fallen.

Butler, 51, filed a lawsuit Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court claiming that he is owed at least $13.6 million in back-end compensation from the action film’s profits.

According to Variety, the lawsuit alleges that the producers had undervalued domestic and foreign receipts by tens of millions of dollars. The Scottish actor claims in the suit that they also did not report $10.9 million that went to its own studio executives.

The suit then cited that there was fraud, breach of contract, breach of the implied covenant of good faith, and fair dealing and intentional interference with contractual relations and accounting with the film.

In Olympus Has Fallen, Butler starred as Mike Banning, a Secret Service agent who must save the president when terrorists take over the White House. The film spawned two sequels, London Has Fallen and Angel Has Fallen.

“Producers have earned tens of millions of dollars from Olympus, but refuse to pay Butler a penny of the profits promised to him in the parties’ agreement,” the complaint stated.

“Producers embarked on a scheme designed to grossly misrepresent the finances of the Film to Butler, so that Butler would believe that no such payments were due.

“It appears the Producers’ modus operandi is to hide the profits from Olympus in order to keep those profits for themselves,” the lawsuit added.

Butler’s filing comes hot off the heels of another A-lister who is suing the producers of her film.

On Thursday, Scarlett Johansson made headlines when she decided to sue Disney over the streaming release of her superhero blockbuster, Black Widow.

Johansson claimed that her contract was breached when the media giant released the movie on its Disney+ streaming service at the same time it hit movie theatres.

The decision to put Black Widow on the small screen cost the actress more than $68 million, she said in the suit.

“There is no merit whatsoever to this filing,” Disney said in a statement after the filing.

“The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson’s contract and furthermore, the release of ‘Black Widow’ on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20M she has received to date.”

Secret to Kate Middleton and Prince William’s marriage success - NEWS.com.au

To understand what lies at the heart of William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s marriage, and how they have managed to escape the Windsor curse, you have to go back to July 29, 1980.

It was a Tuesday and crowds had gathered at Cowdray polo club to watch Prince Charles do his darnedest with his mallet and there among the bevy of Sloane-y gals watching the future king was an intriguing new face.

On the day, The Sun’s long-time royal photographer Arthur Edward had heard a whisper that Charles had a new girlfriend but when he spotted the 19-year-old he snapped a few shots but dismissed things. She was so young and a nursery teacher.

The girl was, of course, the teenage Lady Diana Spencer and exactly a year to the day later, she would walk down the aisle of St Paul’s in London while a global audience of 750 million people watched on.

Later, she would reveal she felt like a “lamb to the slaughter” on her wedding day but to the outside world, she was a fairytale made flesh and blood. It would be years before the world would come to see just how wretched the Wales’ union was.

When 30 years later, Kate Middleton made her own four-minute walk up the aisle of Westminster Abbey to trade haunting Chelsea’s frock shops to be a working HRH, the numbers were stacked against her.

The house of Windsor might be splendid at many things – breeding horses, christening boats and keeping their Teutonic tidily hidden away – but on the marriage front, they have a truly appalling track record.

Prince Edward is the only one of the Queen’s four children who has not been divorced and Princess Anne’s son Peter Phillips became the first of Her Majesty’s grandchildren to dissolve his union earlier this year.

So how in the name of Mischon de Raya, Diana’s famous divorce firm, has Kate managed to pull off the royal coup of the century and made their marriage work?

RELATED: Kate’s miserable 12 months

In April this year the couple marked 10 years of marriage, releasing a slick, professionally-produced ‘home movie’ featuring the Cambridge family gambolling over sand dunes, all rendered in muted, co-ordinating hues and projecting cozy domesticity.

The answer, according to insiders, is two-fold.

To start with, they work well together – and I mean, work.

RELATED: Kate’s heartbreak behind new George photo

While Charles watched, dismayed and perturbed, as his new wife’s popularity eclipsed his own, setting off years of the duo intractably locked in a game of one-upmanship, William and Kate have escaped following in his parents’ sour footsteps.

“They’ve got a solid relationship and she gives him confidence,” one friend who attended the couple’s 2011 wedding revealed to The Times. “There is no jealousy, no friction, they are happy for each other’s successes.”

According to The Times, “In private William talks as passionately about Kate’s work as his own campaigns, and takes pride in her growing confidence on the public stage.”

Look at any photos of the couple out and about during an official engagement and it is clear that they are better together, a smiling, warm double act – the sum is greater than the aristocratic parts, if you will.

“Ultimately they are very much on the same side, on the same team. There is quite a lot of affectionate joshing between them but they have always had each other’s backs,” a source close to the couple told The Telegraph earlier this year.

“They are both very similar in the respect that they are intrinsically quite shy people who have sometimes struggled with life in the limelight,” one royal insider has said. “When he is having a difficult time, she is the one who helps him through it but it works both ways. He is there for her and she is there for him.”

Perhaps more interesting is how their partnership has affected William and given him the critical stability and groundedness that was lacking in his life for so long.

“Marriage maketh the man,” a friend has told The Times. “Catherine’s groundedness has been the critical anchor.”

“Watching them over the past decade, they are the couple who finish each other’s sentences,” royal biographer Katie Nicholl has said. “As with any marriage, there have been ups and downs, but they have got through them. This is a marriage based on friendship.”

RELATED: One wish Kate and William have for George

That equality extends their home life where they reportedly balance their ever-growing royal workloads with raising their three children, with them taking it in turns and juggling diaries to ensure one of them always does the school drop offs and is there when they come home in the afternoon.

There is also something fascinating in considering the one thing that Kate gives William that no one else in his world ever has – a taste of normality. From their early years as a couple, he spent time with the Middleton family, reportedly even calling Michael Middleton, on occasion, ‘Dad’.

There were Sunday lunch roasts (with William’s favourite red wine on hand) and the duo even spent Christmas there on two occasions, skipping the elaborate, deeply formal royal celebration at Sandringham.

(Let’s never forget the ruckus William set off in 2008 when, during his RAF training, he landed a military helicopter on the Middletons’ lawn as part of a training flight.)

“[William] absolutely adores them. Michael is charming. Really kind, soft and gentle. William loves going to the country to stay with them. Their family life is so soothing for him as it’s so different from his own family,” a friend of the Middleton family said last year.

The centrality of his wife’s family was only affirmed when two days after the birth of their first child George, they relocated to Michael and Carol’s $9.4 million home Bucklebury Manor to spend their first few weeks acclimatising to parenthood.

Interestingly, one of the most significant ways his wife has proven to be a steadying influence on the future King William V is when it comes to dealing with the baying media.

Despite having spent years being chased, literally, by photographers around London, it was Kate who is reported to have been the one to push for a more strategic and sanguine approach.

“Where his relationship with the media was once all fury and frustration, he now understands using the power of modern media, so the public feel they’re getting enough access,” the same friend has said.

When the Cambridges became parents in 2013 welcoming son Prince George, it was Kate who reportedly decided to take a leaf out of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden’s book and to establish a compact with the press and the public. The royal house would doll out regular photos of the baby and in return would be able to enjoy a blessed peace that William was denied as a child.

A close aide told The Times, “For years, the battles around privacy and paparazzi intrusion were all consuming. He wanted to know, could we build them a credible plan allowing them a family life while slowly increasing the profile of official life? It took years to get there, but the success of that plan allowed him to be confident and content in his role. He’s not worried about his kids’ privacy any more and he has been able to be the kind of dad he wants to be.”

The rare success that is William and Kate’s partnership also lies in the fact that their priorities align perfectly.

“Kate understands that the only credo of the Royal Family is duty, duty, duty,” one royal courtier told Tatler last year.

Which might sound simple on paper but the reality is far more demanding. Consider that less than 24-hours after giving birth for the first time she appeared in front of cheering, clapping crowds and a veritable wall of cameras that towered over the new family. Still, time and again she has approached daunting moments such as this with grace and poise.

Likewise in 2012. She and William were in Malaysia in the midst of a tour of southeast Asia to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee when topless photos of Kate, taken during the couple’s recent holiday in France, were published.

Both the duke and duchess were “furious”, according to biographer Nicholl, after being briefed about the situation by their private secretary, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, but she still put on an exemplary performance shaking hands and accepting flowers as they ploughed through the day’s itinerary.

Thursday this week marked 40-years since Charles and Diana’s wedding and it is impossible to not compare the two marriages, one defined by hurt and rancour and the other by their success as a consummate partnerships, both in public and at home.

Diana might have been a lamb to the slaughter on her wedding day but when Kate made that daunting, nerve-jangling four-minute walk down the aisle, looking back, she was actually a wolf in an Alexander McQueen gown. Thank god for that. I’m sure the Queen does.

Samantha Ramsdell wins Guinness record for the world’s largest mouth gape of a female - NEWS.com.au

A woman, with 1.7 million followers on TikTok, has scored a Guinness World Record for her gigantic mouth.

Samantha Ramsdell, from Connecticut in the US, broke the record for the world’s largest mouth gape of a female measuring in at 6.5cm.

The 31-year-old has gone viral on TikTok for the unusual party tricks she can perform with her mouth, but admitted she used to be an extremely insecure about the body part.

The medical sales representative told Guinness officials that she feels “great” that her mouth is now a reason for celebration.

Growing up, she was often bullied with other kids calling her hurtful things like “big bass mouth” among other names, but she now describes her mouth as her “superpower”.

“You know getting a Guinness World Records title, it’s finally being almost able to show some of the bullies or people who doubted me, or tormented me, that hey – I have a big mouth but at least I have the biggest one in the world,” she said.

“Being 31 and being able to get a record for something that really I was so insecure about, something that I wanted to keep so small, it’s great because now it’s like one of the biggest, best things about me.”

Guinness World Records also compared everyday objects to her enormous gape, uncovering a range of party tricks she can perform with her mouth.

These include nearly fitting an entire green apple in her mouth, fully biting through four-single stacked cheeseburgers and stuffing an entire large size chips in her mouth.

Looking for a creative outlet, she joined TikTok last year during the pandemic even though at first she felt “too old”.

“But it was the one thing I could do right now to keep me busy and keep me creative, so I started doing some singing, some of my comedy stuff, and I did one comedy video where I made this crazy face, and the children of TikTok were like, ‘what happened to your face?!’” she told Guinness World Records.

She had just 300 followers when she initially started out, but the unique things she can do with her mouth have gained her millions of fans.

“My mouth has set me apart from the other millions of comedians, singers and all these other creators. I never thought it would be possible to be this famous off my mouth, but it’s incredible. It’s really cool,” she said.

While Ramsdell must be every dentist’s dream, she has previously revealed that she lost 22kg two years ago, which helped her regain a bunch of confidence.

Her own dream is to one day to have her own show and including humour, wit and singing as part of her routine.

Shane Warne spills on Hollywood movie about his life - NEWS.com.au

Shane Warne has opened up about plans for a Hollywood movie based on his life.

In 2019 the Herald Sun reported that the cricket legend was flying to LA to discuss a potential film about his Indian Premier League triumph with the Rajasthan Royals in 2008.

“A guy has written a script about it, this company want to shoot it, so it’s basically a Hollywood movie shot for India,” Warnie said at the time. “And they’re basing it on my story of how we put together the Royals in 2008 and they’ve ‘Hollywood-ised’ it. It’s all sorts of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll stuff.”

So what’s the latest on the movie?

Speaking to news.com.au this week to promote his latest commercial for Advanced Hair Studio, the sporting superstar said “it has been put on hold” due to the pandemic. But that doesn’t mean it won’t get made.

“I think hopefully by the end of the year or early next year we’ll pick it up again and see what’s going on,” he told news.com.au.

As for who he’d like to play him on the big screen, Warnie said: “You might as well pick out some of the best people, right? We’re talking DiCaprio, Hemsworth, Brad Pitt.”

While the movie may be on hold, another project based on Warnie’s life has been made and is set to be released soon.

“I can’t say too much,” he told news.com.au. “Let’s just say there’s a documentary coming out soon about my life.”

It’s not yet known which streaming service the doco will be released on.

Warnie revealed on Fox Cricket last year that the doco was going ahead, saying: “I’ve signed with a company to follow me around … we’re going to do sit-down interviews about everything. Nothing’s off limits. We’re going to go in-depth about it all.

“They want to experience what I’m like as a father at home, poker in [Las] Vegas, commentary here in Australia and in England, they want to go to India during the IPL and watch me team mentor … and generally just follow me around.”

He continued: “I hope the reason for doing this is, I hope I can inspire people. I hope I can help people understand a bit more about me as a person, not the person they always saw on the cricket field.

“If they like me, great. If they don’t, it’s OK. I’m just doing it for me and it’s something hopefully my kids and grandkids can say, ‘Hey, this was my dad, this is what he did.’”

More reality TV for Shane Warne?

A potential movie is in the works and a doco is on the way, but is Warnie keen to have a crack at another reality TV show as well?

Last year his son, Jackson, was one of the celebrity recruits on SAS Australia. When asked if he’d be willing to appear on the brutal reality show as well, Warnie told news.com.au: “Watching Jackson and speaking to him about it, he said, ‘Dad, you couldn’t do it.’ I’m not sure I couldn’t do it, but no, I think I’ll keep myself out of that. I’ve done my one reality show which was the jungle (I’m a Celeb) and that was good but pretty difficult. I don’t think I’d do any more.”

Warnie was speaking to news.com.au to promote his 16-year partnership with Advanced Hair Studio.

He said the recent lockdowns in Australia could have contributed to some peoples’ hair problems and encouraged them to seek help.

“Hair loss can be caused by stress and many other factors,” he told news.com.au. “If it’s affecting you, go and have a consultation at Advanced Hair Studio. We now offer a 100 per cent guarantee to treat your hair loss problems and we offer virtual consultations as well.”

Schapelle Corby takes trip to Whitsundays with mum but brings carry-on luggage only - NEWS.com.au

Schapelle Corby has gone back in the air — but this time with carry-on luggage only.

Teasing her 164,000 Instagram followers, Ms Corby first posted a photograph with her mother from the plane, showing both of them wearing masks.

“Up, up and away. Adventure time with Mum. Going somewhere. #carryon #only,” she joked.

The decision was a careful move from Ms Corby, who at 27 was convicted of smuggling 4.2kg of cannabis into Indonesia via a checked-in boogie board bag and jailed in the country’s brutal Kerobokan prison for nine years.

Now 44, Ms Corby still vehemently maintains her innocence.

Several hours later, she posted another photograph of herself smiling with a few drinks.

“Oh Yes! Arrived. #visitairliebeach,” she wrote.

She later posted two more photographs, including one with her mother and another of the resort.

Many followers were supportive — and envious — of her travel adventure to Airlie Beach in the Whitsunday region of Queensland.

“I’m jealous. Being in Sydney I can only dream of being there again …. Enjoy,” one user replied to a post.

Another person commented: “I’m surprised you don’t have an absolute fear of flying now. I think I would but good on you.”

Some people did call her out though for not wearing her mask properly.

“You have to cover the nose! It’s only half working otherwise!” one person wrote.

In her book, Ms Corby wrote about surviving corrupt guards, degrading conditions and abuse at the hands of other prisoners while at Kerobokan.

In a preview for the memoir, published by Pan McMillan, it says Ms Corby put her thoughts to paper “driven by a determination to show she has emerged, scarred, but with her dignity, humour and courage intact”.

More recently, Ms Corby joined Dancing With The Stars.

The 44-year-old was partnered with Shae Mountain and they were the third couple to be eliminated.

She was also a popular addition to the first season of SAS Australia last year.

Ms Corby has previously called out online bullying, after being targeted by some social media users.

“If you’ve got your health, live your truth. Get out there and live,” she wrote earlier this year.

“Don’t let other people’s opinions affect the way you live your life and take a few photos while you’re at it.”

The Pursuit of Love is a heady cocktail of youth, rebellion and vitality - NEWS.com.au

It would be easy to write off The Pursuit of Love as another corsets and lace period drama, full of fainting ladies and strict social etiquette.

Well, there are no disapproving butlers or even eavesdropping from around the corner of the drawing room.

The Pursuit of Love is crackling with life and infused with an infectious, irrepressible spirit that Nancy Mitford, whose book it is adapted from, would definitely approve of.

Written and directed by actor Emily Mortimer, over three episodes, we’re invited into the dramatic world of Linda Radlett (Lily James), a young woman who’s entirely enraptured by the idea of grand, sweeping romantic love.

Linda is described by her cousin Fanny (Emily Beecham) as someone who “loved or loathed, laughed or cried, lived in a world of superlatives”. Linda feels everything, and she feels everything greatly.

But adventures and romance are off-limits. She and her siblings are confined to their family’s estate by their xenophobic father Matthew (Dominic West), a bombastic man who thinks the worst fate to befall a woman is education, and who literally cracks whips at dawn.

Mounted in the dining room is the weapon he used to kill Germans in WWI, displayed to emphasise Matthew’s deep distrust of any foreigners.

Despite being opposites in temperament, Linda and Fanny are best friends, with the more sensible, educated girl often roped into her impulsive cousin’s exploits. Fanny’s own mother, named only as The Bolter (Mortimer), is renowned for going through men with rapid speed, a reputation that Fanny has no desire to emulate.

RELATED: Time is a powerful prison drama

In the years leading up to WWI, there’s no place for women in upper-class English society to be individualists. But despite the best efforts of the “what’s expected” crowd, Linda is exactly that, a vivacious, uncompromising individualistic whose desires and whims are never tempered.

It’s a character that could’ve so easily been a caricature, a naive, inconsiderate brat who leaves chaos in her wake. But in James and Mortimer’s hands, drawn from Mitford’s writing, Linda is luminous, complex and commands empathy.

James can really break your heart with a single hurt look.

All the characters are larger-than-life, including Lord Merlin (Andrew Scott), the Radletts’ bon vivant neighbour who’s a patron to the artistic and bohemian Bright Young Things, and whose whippets prefer whisky.

But they’re all balanced by Fanny’s grounded narration, and it’s through Fanny’s eyes we experience this wondrous world, so it never feels as if The Pursuit of Love tips into farce.

RELATED: Ted Lasso is a TV phenomenon

Mortimer had previously co-written HBO series Doll & Em (with Dolly Wells, who has a small role here as Linda’s mother), but this is her directorial debut. She has a confident grasp on the miniseries’ tone, and a clear, deep love for these characters that were created all those years ago by one of the non-fascist Mitford sisters.

The Pursuit of Love whips along at a cracker pace – scenes often have fast editing – while its soundtrack is just as likely to feature Marianne Faithfull and Bryan Ferry as it does Strauss and Rossini, giving the whole affair that heady cocktail of youth, rebellion and vitality.

In that sense, there are reminiscences of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette and Tony McNamara’s The Great, two period productions you would never condemn as stodgy or staid.

It’s a very appealing, very intoxicating series.

The Pursuit of Love is on Amazon Prime Video from Friday, July 30

Kourtney Kardashian glows in the dark in white-hot thong bikini - NEWS.com.au

Kourtney Kardashian’s night-time swim was lit … by her bikini, that is.

The reality star, 42, went for a dip in the dark, sharing photos of herself literally glowing in a thong bikini on Wednesday.

“Life is but a dream,” she captioned a series of poolside snaps, with her teeny white-hot two-piece lighting up the night as she struck several poses on the pool deck and in the water, perhaps under a black light.

RELATED: Kourtney divides fans with see-through top

Followers were dazzled by the luminescent look, with one dubbing her a “flawless mermaid,” while another commented, “glowing as always”.

Perhaps it’s love that has Kardashian shining: Things have been heating up with her boyfriend Travis Barker this summer, with the pair frequently packing on PDA.

But while the star sported bridal Minnie Mouse ears at Disneyland and is called “stepmum” by Barker’s daughter, sources close to the couple told Page Six they are not engaged yet.

It’s not the first time the Poosh founder has made waves with her steamy snaps, as she was praised for posting an unedited bikini photo earlier in the summer.

The Kardashians are used to being in the limelight for their swimsuit snaps, having inspired several swimwear trends this summer alone, ranging from velour to underboob-baring styles.

With the family frequently swapping style cues, perhaps her latest photo will have her sisters seeing the light on glow-in-the-dark swimwear.

Jungle Cruise review: Even Emily Blunt can’t make Disney’s generic adventure movie interesting - NEWS.com.au

Before Pirates of the Caribbean spawned five movies with a combined box office total of $US4.5 billion ($A6.1 billion), the idea of mining Disneyland rides for blockbusters would’ve been laughed out of the room.

The concept is still bonkers, and creatively bankrupt, but it is also highly lucrative. Which makes Jungle Cruise inevitable, born from a 66-year-old ambling riverboat ride which has just been revamped to remove racist imagery.

There’s a very specific formula that Jungle Cruise has lifted from Pirates – mix together bankable stars, inoffensive humour, loads of CGI effects and an over-the-top story. It’s even got a villain with squiggly things coming out of its face like Davy Jones.

Is it cinema? No. Does it need to be? No. Jungle Cruise is exactly what you expect it to be, a bombastic but bland action-adventure jam packed with outlandish set pieces, clocking in at 30 minutes too long.

RELATED: Jack Whitehall based Jungle Cruise character on his dad

It’s escapism and stimulation designed for the family movie crowd – except now half of them will be watching it at home on Disney+ (for an extra fee), instead of racing out to the cinema. Jungle Cruise is currently the last Disney movie slated for the cinema/premium streaming simultaneous release.

What Jungle Cruise has going for it is Emily Blunt who is, as always, incandescent as Dr Lily Houghton, a resourceful, fearless and pants-wearing early 20th century botanist who could outwit and outdo Indiana Jones in an instant.

Lily is searching for Tears of the Moon, a mythological tree hidden deep in the Amazon whose leaves are said to cure any illness and break any curse.

With her brother MacGregor (Jack Whitehall), who is disdainful of public transport but fond of travelling with far too much luggage, Lily charters Frank (Dwayne Johnson) and his riverboat to make the treacherous journey.

RELATED: 13 Cannes movies we’re excited about

Chasing Lily is a rival expedition led by German Prince Joachim (Jesse Plemons), a snivelly toad who has commandeered what looks to be a U-boat submarine for his jungle adventure. He also wants the Tears of the Moon, for what specific reason is not clear.

There’s also the matter of Aguirre (Edgar Ramirez, totally wasted), a Spanish conquistador who first sought the Tears of the Moon 400 years earlier and has since then been trapped by a curse after slaughtering the Indigenous population.

This is a great cast, who no doubt wants to show their kids or nieces and nephews a fun movie they were in rather than some sombre drama – except of course The Rock, whose movies are always chaste.

Blunt livens up an otherwise dull affair and Whitehall gets a few good lines in too. The Rock is playing The Rock, and of course he’s charismatic but there’s little distinction between his character here and elsewhere – you could easily think you’ve slipped into the next Jumanji instalment instead.

RELATED: Sean Bean anchors powerful drama Time

The movie, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, incorporates cheeky nods to the original ride, lifting scenarios and dialogue straight out of the pun-laden script park employees recite in Los Angeles, Florida, Hong Kong and Tokyo.

While there’s something to be said for wringing a story out of a theme park ride that is just tableaus of things you might find alongside a river in the jungle, the Jungle Cruise’s narrative is as generic as that 66-year-old ride. Even Blunt’s megawatt power can’t save that.

Rating: 2.5/5

Jungle Cruise is in cinemas from Thursday, July 29 (excluding lockdown areas) and on Disney+’s Premier Access ($34.99) from Friday, July 30

Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky may SELL $30million Byron Bay mansion - Daily Mail

Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky 'are SELLING their $30million Byron Bay mega-mansion'... after angering locals by transforming the resort-style home into a monolithic 'shopping centre'

  • Do you know more? Email tips@dailymail.com

Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky only completed their Byron Bay mansion earlier this year, but they may already be looking to offload the $30million compound.

According to the Courier Mail, the couple are interested in selling the Broken Head Road home so they can move somewhere else in the trendy hamlet.

The publication claims the A-listers recently 'inspected a large landholding at nearby Lennox Head'.

However, that property ended up being sold to some Sydneysiders, who purchased it for about $15million to use as a holiday home.

Chris and Elsa completed their mega-mansion earlier this year, and the monolithic home has skyrocketed in price since the family moved in.

Originally estimated at $20million, property experts said in January the LA-style compound, located in Broken Head near Byron Bay, was now worth $30million.

Lloyd Edge, founder and director of Aus Property Professionals and author of best-selling book Positively Geared, said the market value had gone up significantly since the original dwelling was knocked down and rebuilt.

He told Daily Mail Australia: 'I estimate that in the current market the property could sell for up to $30million.'

Mr Edge based his price on a number of 'comparables', including what other homes in the area were selling for.

He noted a five-bedroom home at nearby 35 Marine Parade, with private stairs leading down to Wategos Beach and a heated infinity pool overlooking the ocean, was worth $22million.

A smaller property in the area on Lighthouse Road was valued at $9million, while a yet-to-be-built home overlooking Main Beach in Byron Bay was worth $60million.

He added: 'Byron Bay and surrounding areas is now one of the hottest property markets in the country.

'Hemsworth bought the property for $9million but spent around $18million building the mansion.'

Chris and his family began construction on the mansion, which was previously an eight-bedroom resort-style home known as Kooeloah, in late 2017.

Angry neighbours were quick to say the rebuild reminded them of a suburban shopping centre, a refurbished RSL club or a regional airport terminal.

Others compared it to a multi-storey car park.

The 50-metre rooftop infinity pool alone was estimated to have cost at least $400,000, an enormous indoor mural could be worth as much as $100,000, and the landscaping bill would have reached about $500,000.

Formwork and concrete for the foundations of Fortress Hemsworth - known on architectural plans as 'Project 657 BHR' - would have set the couple back $1.5million to $2million.

For Sydney builder Jason Natoli, who specialises in luxury renovations, the most striking aspect of the new Broken Head landmark was its sheer size.

'It's ginormous,' Mr Natoli said. 'You've got an infinity pool with a spa, five bedrooms with five ensuites, a large indoor-outdoor kitchen, a four-car garage.

'There's a cinema room, massage room, sauna room, steam room, games room with a bar. There's also a mud room - I've never heard of that before.'

Mud rooms, made popular in America, are secondary entrances used to store coats, shoes and items such as bikes, umbrellas and surfboards which are regularly carried in and out of the house.

There is also a gymnasium, butler's pantry, fire pit, change rooms, outdoor play area for the three Hemsworth children, and walk-in wardrobes attached to four of the bedrooms.

On top of that, the couple added a two-lane bowling alley in the home worth $110,000.

Next to the alley is an enormous mural by Indigenous artist Otis Carey worth about $100,000.

Because the house is surrounded by bushland it is required to have its own 20,000 litre fire-fighting water tanks and extra access for Rural Fire Service vehicles.

Mr Natoli said he could not see any provision for landing a helicopter, one of Chris' favourite modes of transportation.

While the average floor size of a new Sydney home is now 186.3 square metres, the Hemsworth residence covers about 900 square metres internally.

The construction is technically only one-storey, but the staggered floors make it appear to be multi-leveled.

Mr Natoli, whose Jcorp Construction renovated publicist Roxy Jacenko $6.5million home in Vaucluse, described the Hemsworths' home as an 'LA-style mansion'.

'It's a gorgeous house,' Mr Natoli said. 'Technically it's one level but it's sort of stepped to make it feel as one.

'You could say it's an LA sort of mansion-style design. It's a very contemporary LA-style, where everything is indoor-outdoor living.'

The couple had planned the house so the huge glass windows and doors opened out to the rooftop entertaining area, including the pool and surrounding bushland.

'When it opens up it feels like the outdoors and indoors are all one,' Mr Natoli said.

Not all locals have welcomed the size of Fortress Hemsworth.

'I thought Byron would be Noosafied but apparently it's being Hollywooded,' one wrote on Facebook last year, adding: 'Next level.'

Another woman went further: 'It's obscene, greedy, flashy, vulgar opulence at its finest and has no place in the Byron I once knew and love.

'A sad sign of things to come due to greedy, unfettered development policy.'

Lovely views: The property, about 12 kilometres out of Byron Bay, is on Broken Head Road and overlooks Seven Mile Beach

But Mr Natoli said while the scale of the house was enormous the design was relatively simple.

'It's just a big box,' he said. 'There's nothing too flashy. The only thing is it's huge.'

The property, about 12 kilometres out of Byron Bay, is on Broken Head Road and overlooks Seven Mile Beach.

A development application approved by Byron Shire Council estimated the cost of construction to be $18million.

Most of that money has gone back into the Northern Rivers community. The home was built by Jason Stehn whose company Stehnbuild is based in nearby Bangalow.

Jamie Lee Curtis reveals her 25-year-old daughter is transgender - NEWS.com.au

Jamie Lee Curtis has revealed that her younger child is transgender.

The Freaky Friday star told AARP Magazinethat she and husband Christopher Guest “have watched in wonder and pride as our son became our daughter Ruby”.

Curtis also shared that Ruby — who was previously known as Thomas — and her fiancé are getting married next year in a wedding that the star will officiate.

Ruby, 25, works as a computer gaming editor while Curtis and Guest’s 34-year-old daughter, Annie, is married and works as a dance instructor.

The longtime Hollywood couple have no grandchildren “but I do hope to,” she told the publication.

RELATED: Star’s shocking drug low with father

Ruby’s transition helped the Knives Out actress realise gender isn’t fixed, and she since has tossed out that “old idea,” instead learning that her life is a “constant metamorphosis”.

Curtis, 62, also opened up about being 22 years sober, saying she’d be “dead for sure” if she hadn’t kicked her addiction. She now describes herself as “just a sober person — flawed, contradictory, broken and redeemed” and focuses on shedding everything that no longer suits her life.

“Let’s get rid of that, I don’t need that,” she said. “It’s all about old ideas that don’t work anymore.”

The Halloween star marked the milestone in February with an emotional Instagram post about her journey.

“With God’s grace and the support of MANY people who could relate to all the ‘feelings’ and a couple of sober angels … I’ve been able to stay sober, one day at a time, for 22 years,” she wrote.

“I was a high bottom, pun kind of intended, so the rare photo of me proudly drinking in a photo op is very useful to help me remember. To all those struggling and those who are on the path … MY HAND IN YOURS.”

A-list star made Hugh Jackman clean up vomit in his trailer - NEWS.com.au

A major Hollywood star was less than impressed when Hugh Jackman’s best mate vomited in his trailer.

Jackman’s BFF since kindergarten, Gus Worland, told the story on KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O Show this morning and then challenged listeners to call in and guess who the Hollywood star was.

Worland explained that he was in the US visiting Jackman on a movie set when one of his co-stars invited them both to have a drink in his “much bigger trailer”.

“I walk into the trailer and it’s got a Cuban cigar in each corner with a cigar cutter … and there’s a tub of drinks and stuff,” Worland said on air.

“We sit down and start having a conversation and I’m struggling to get the words out because I’m so excited that I’m in his company,” Worland said about the A-lister.

But things quickly went pear-shaped.

“I’m drinking a little bit too quickly, I’m overexcited, and I find myself in a position where I’m starting to go a bit ‘oopsie’,” Worland told Kyle and Jackie O.

“Jacko’s looking at me going, ‘Are you OK, mate?’ I said, ‘I’m fine, I’m fine.’”

But Worland wasn’t fine at all.

“I’m smoking this cigar, I’m drinking these drinks and I’m hammered within an hour,” he said. “I just go, ‘Oh no, I can’t hold this.’ I tried to shimmy out of the horseshoe [table] set up … which is a difficult thing to do … and I don’t quite get to the door of the trailer and I throw up everywhere.”

Worland said that Jackman found it rather amusing, but the other celebrity did not.

“He has no sense of humour [about the situation] and he starts shouting at Jacko for laughing at me and then gets Jacko to mop the whole thing up,” Worland recalled. “That takes Jacko about 20 minutes.”

“He got Hugh Jackman to mop up your chunder?” a shocked Kyle Sandilands asked.

“Yeah,” Worland said. “This guy I see quite a bit now because we’ve stayed mates … and he still reminds me all the time.”

Listeners then called through with a number of guesses about which A-lister’s trailer the incident took place in.

Eventually someone correctly guessed that it was John Travolta, with Worland confirming it happened when Travolta and Jackman were filming Swordfish together.

Mind Your Mate campaign

Worland, who is a Triple M radio star, was on Kyle and Jackie O to promote a new initiative for his Gotcha4Life Foundation called the ‘Mind Your Mate’ campaign.

“I want everyone to write down a list of all the people in their life that they love and actually go to our website gotcha4life.org and pledge your mateship to them,” Worland said. “And I can send you some tips and tricks to make sure your relationship is stronger than ever before.”

Gotcha4Life is an Australian mental fitness charity that Worland set up with the aim of taking action to engage, educate and empower to end suicide.

Jamie Lee Curtis proudly announces her youngest child is transgender: 'Watched in wonder and pride' - 9Honey Celebrity

Jamie Lee Curtis has publicly shared for the first time that her youngest child is transgender.

With the permission of 25-year-old Ruby, Curtis made the announcement in an interview with AARP magazine, published this week.

"[We] watched in wonder and pride as our son became our daughter Ruby," Curtis, 62, told the outlet of her daughter, who she shares with husband Christopher Guest.

The couple of 36 years also share another child, Annie, 34. Ruby, who is a computer gaming editor, and dance instructor Annie were adopted by the couple when they were infants.

In the interview, Curtis said her daughter's transition helped her shift her mindset and ditch her past beliefs that gender identity was fixed.

"I am somebody who sheds every day. Let's get rid of that, I don't need that. It's all about old ideas that don't work anymore," she told the magazine, adding that life is a "constant metamorphosis".

The Halloween star is also excited for Ruby to walk down the aisle very soon and will have a major role in the wedding.

"She and her fiancé will get married next year at a wedding that I will officiate," the proud mum said.

Curtis — who is the daughter of late Hollywood stars Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh — is also hoping to be a grandparent in the near future.

"Not yet, but I do hope to," she said.

The actress also shared a photo of the AARP magazine cover on Instagram, gushing about being "happy that my family is safe and flourishing"

"I very rarely smile in photographs. An old idea. I couldn't help myself though during this shoot with @aarp @brianbowensmith because I AM SO HAPPY! Happy to be me. Happy to be having such a creative time. Happy that I'm sober and clear. Happy that my family is safe and flourishing … LIFE IS SWEET!"

Orlando Bloom’s surprising public move against neighbour Prince Harry - NEWS.com.au

They’re close neighbours and reportedly even friends – but surely Prince Harry won’t be too happy about actor Orlando Bloom’s latest project.

Bloom voices none other than Harry himself in the new satirical cartoon series The Prince, which takes a less-than-flattering look at the British royal family.

The trailer dropped overnight, and shows the royals, drawn with exaggerated features, as pampered simpletons waited on hand and foot by their servants in Buckingham Palace.

Created by comedian and writer Gary Janetti, who gained a cult following online for impersonating William and Kate’s young son Prince George on Instagram, the new cartoon focuses on the eight-year-old as he navigates life in the palace and at school.

Harry may not mind the portrayal of his family members, given his very public exit from royal life, but he and Meghan also make an appearance in the trailer, inspecting apartments in their new home of LA.

“This might be the smallest palace I’ve ever been in,” says Harry, as voiced by Bloom.

Wife Meghan, voiced by Condola Rashad, tells him it’s an apartment – but he still doesn’t get it.

“Yes, an apartment palace, I know that. Lots of tiny palaces inside one big palace.”

The dimwitted portrayal is a surprising new role for Bloom, given he and Prince Harry are now close neighbours in the exclusive neighbourhood of Montecito, California.

Bloom confessed to The Hollywood Reporter back in August 2020 that he was nervous to take on the role, saying: “I’m a British boy who’s very proud of my roots.”

But he said wife Katy Perry had convinced him: “Katy saw one bit of it and was like, ‘You’ve got to do this. This is genius.’”

Bloom also revealed he hadn’t yet met Prince Harry when he signed on to the project.

“This guy is so nice, and I think he’s got a great sense of humour. I hope he maintains that through this because they’re sort of on a pedestal. We’re showing real adoration to them in one form or another,” he said. “I try to justify it, because quite frankly, if I’m honest, it’s not like me to poke fun at anyone but it is done with affection.”

In an appearance on Dax Shephard’s Armchair Expert podcast back in May, Prince Harry revealed he’d struck up a budding friendship with his new neighbour Bloom.

“Two days ago, Orlando Bloom sent me a message, ’cause he’s down the road and we sort of keep in contact because of the paparazzi,” Harry said.

The two have common connections in designer Misha Nonoo – who allegedly played matchmaker for Harry and Meghan – and singer Ellie Goulding. Both the Sussexes and Bloom and Perry attended Nonoo’s wedding in Rome in 2019.

Royal expert Dicky Arbiter claimed it was Harry who initiated the friendship.

“Harry’s befriended Orlando Bloom. Orlando Bloom thinks, ‘Ooh very nice – a friend of the royal family.’ It works both ways,” Arbiter told the Daily Mail.

Rebel Wilson reveals the very personal reason she lost 30kg - NEWS.com.au

Rebel Wilson has her heart set on starting a family.

The 41-year-old actress revealed that she shed 30kg in order to have a “better chance” at getting pregnant.

“That is such a massive question, but I’m going to try to answer it for you,” Wilson said during an Instagram Live in response to a fan asking why she decided to embark on her health journey in 2020.

“It first started when I was looking into fertility stuff and the doctor was like, ‘Well, you’d have a much better chance if you were healthier.’”

The Isn’t It Romantic star was initially offended at her doctor’s comments as she believed she was “pretty healthy” at her current weight.

But she decided to shape up not for vanity reasons but for her future.

“That’s kind of what started it, that if I lost some excess weight that it would give me a better chance for freezing eggs and having the eggs be a better quality,” she said. “It wasn’t even really myself, it was more thinking of a future mini-me, really.”

Wilson revealed that she received bad news about her fertility struggle in May 2021.

“To all the women out there struggling with fertility, I feel ya,” she said at the time, adding, “The universe works in mysterious ways and sometimes it all doesn’t make sense … but I hope there’s light about to shine through all the dark clouds.”

The Pitch Perfect star initially began losing weight in 2020, embarking on a “year of health”.

She shared her fitness journey and in October that year revealed that she was only 3kg away from her goal. A month later she finally hit her goal weight by switching up her exercise routine and eating healthier.

Since then, she has continued to show off her slim figure in thirst trap posts to Instagram.

Wilson is seemingly single, and apparently living her best life, following her break-up with her boyfriend of six months, Jacob Busch, in February.

She and the heir to the Anheuser-Busch fortune made their red carpet debut as a couple in September 2020.
