Prince Harry and his wife Meghan have severed ties with some of Britain's biggest tabloids, vowing in a letter sent out Sunday night that they will never work with them again.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who gave up their jobs as working royals at the end of last month, sent a letter to The Sun, Daily Mail, Daily Express and Daily Mirror detailing their new "zero engagement" policy, according to extracts published in the Financial Times, the Guardian and ITV News.
The letter outlines the “new media relations policy” for the couple now that they “no longer receive any publicly funded support” - “there will be no corroboration and zero engagement” with the UK’s biggest tabloids.
"This policy is not about avoiding criticism. It's not about shutting down public conversation or censoring accurate reporting," the couple's representatives were quoted as saying.
"Media have every right to report on and indeed have an opinion on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, good or bad. But it can't be based on a lie."
The couple said they would no longer "offer themselves up as currency for an economy of clickbait and distortion," according to the reports.
In its report, the Financial Times said under the new policy, the tabloids would be barred from receiving updates and photographs from the couple, and may also be blocked from attending their media events.
The couple’s official account, Sussex Royal, is yet to confirm the letter, a strongly worded attack which says “an influential slice of the media, over many years, has sought to insulate themselves from taking accountability for what they say or print – even when they know it to be distorted, false, or invasive beyond reason.”
The letter comes as Meghan Markle’s lawsuit against the Mail on Sunday for publishing letters she sent to her father is expected to begin proceeding in British courts this week.
The duchess is arguing that the publication of the handwritten letter, leaked to the tabloids by her father, is an infringement of her copyright and misuse of personal information.
The couple have moved to Los Angeles from Canada, but continue be photographed by the paparazzi - as recently as this weekend when they were snapped wearing bandanna face masks and running errands.
The duchess will give her first interview since leaving her royal duties at 9pm AEST when she appears on Good Morning America to discuss her new Disney film Elephant.
She has narrated a documentary telling the story of Shani, a female elephant, and her son Jomo as they embark on an eight-month journey across 1,000 miles of the Kalahari desert.
