Sydney seafood consultant John Susman worked for McMahon at Barrenjoey House in the 1980s and told The Australian the death was 'very, very sad'.

'A lot of people forget the alumni that came out of Michael's mentorship. People like Neil Perry,' he said.

Catalina, located on Sydney's picturesque Rose Bay, celebrated its 25th anniversary last year and describes itself as the 'archetypal family business' on its website.

Mr McMahon and his wife began their careers working at the Bulletin Place with Len Evans before making the move to Gay and Tony Bilson's Berowra Waters Inn in 1978.

Mr McMahon worked as the floor manager while Ms McMahon was the establishment's first ever female waitress.

The couple purchased Barrenjoey House in Palm Beach in 1983 and worked with a young Neil Perry before opening Perry's in Paddington.

Both restaurants were widely successful and attained Two Hat ratings in the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide.

Mr and Ms McMahon sold the establishments by 1988 and worked together at the Bilson's in Circular Quay until the purchase of the Catalina in 1994.

Together they transformed the tired old space into the waterfront fine-dining restaurant it is today.

In 2011 Mr McMahon was awarded the Vittoria Legend award for the business at the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Awards.

The couple's children, James and Kate, followed their parents' footsteps continuing the family tradition.
