Lego Masters: Contestants break record in ‘Australian television’ first - NEWS.com.au

When it comes to building with tiny Lego bricks, who’d have thought that tackling height was the biggest challenge on the game board.

But on Sunday night’s episode of Lego Masters on Channel 9, a single challenge proved that the job of stacking blocks on top of each other is in fact one of the toughest tasks to appear on the game show.

In the first challenge of the night, host Hamish Blake gave contestants the ultimate test of time – and height – in a two hour challenge that nine-year-olds around the country would scoff at.

“Build the tallest building possible,” Blake said to the eager contestants. The prize? An advantage for a future build that could ultimately lead to a prize pool of $100k.

But the challenge came with an unwelcome hurdle that sent a gasp across The Brick Pitt.

Build as high as you can, but forget any assistance from a stool or any other device to give contestants any form of extra height.

“You are stool-less for this challenge. I repeat – no stools,” Blake warned to an echo of groans from contestants.

“You have two hours. Two hours to go as high as you can. Tallest tower wins.”

With no aesthetics being judged, no story and no design features to follow – contestants had to beat the 4 metre stick and build the tallest structure in the room.

While some started to build up with a wide solid base, others got caught out with “flimsy” structures that put everyone on edge.

“This is intense,” Blake squealed as the timer ticked away and Lego buildings crashed around him like Jenga blocks.

“This is the fastest build we’ve ever had on Lego Masters and also the highest build. A double record day.”

High school sweethearts Tim and Dannii leapt ahead with a strong start, with just half their building already taller than any other build in the room.

“If you land this I’d say it puts you pretty close to unbeatable,” Blake said to the couple.

But best mates Andrew and Damian had no plans on letting the young couple walk away with a win.

By creating an ultra thin point to go on top of their solid building base, the pair did what Blake thought was impossible. They beat the stick.

“For the first time on Australian television, you two have beaten the stick!” Blake screamed.

But Andrew and Damien, who looked pretty chuffed with just 10 minutes to go, had cool and calm contenders Jay and Stani nipping at their heels.

By opting for a wider base that soared well past the 3 metre mark, their final tier was more secure than what was built by Andrew and Damien.

“It’s so bloody close,” Jay said as he sized up both structures. “It’s so hard to tell.”

But after Blake took a final measure of both structures, childhood friends Jay and Stani showed the rest of the room just how well they could beat the stick … with a final structure “well over four metres”.

“It’s closer to five metres,” Blake said in awe.

“That is just unbelievable.”

Lego Masters airs on Channel 9 each Sunday at 7pm and Monday at 7.30pm.
