What to stream this week: Outer Banks, The Last Dance, Community and more - NEWS.com.au

From a winning kid’s animation to share with the family to the self-referential comedy of a TV powerhouse producer, there’s no shortage of series to watch.

So what are you in the mood for?

SOMETHING NEW

The Last Dance: For sports fans jonesing for a fix, The Last Dance is the 10-part Michael Jordan documentary you might have heard about – it couldn’t come at a better time, indeed, the premiere date was actually moved up. Framed by the 1997-1998 NBA season at the Chicago Bulls, it features unaired footage from Jordan’s last season with the famed team which was shooting for a sixth championship in less than a decade. Watch it: Netflix

BlackAF: Kenya Barris is the man behind hits such as Girls Trip and the forthcoming Coming 2 America. He also created Blackish, a TV sitcom inspired by his own life to explore the issues faced by African-Americans in the US from the perspective of a successful family. BlackAF is a bit of a re-tread of Blackish, except now Barris stars as himself in a series that’s highly self-referential and more than a bit neurotic. But the punchlines are good for plenty of laughs. Watch it: Netflix

SOMETHING SOAPY

Outer Banks: This new teen soap combines the melodrama of rich kids versus poor kids in the seaside community of the Outer Banks, a string of islands off the coast of North Carolina (the same location as The Peanut Butter Falcon), with the adventure of a hunt for sunken treasure. This is very much aimed at teens and young adults and most of the attractive cast seems to have misplaced their costumes – it seems as though when you’re that close to the water, shirts are definitely optional. Watch it: Netflix

Scandal: Corruption, conspiracies and shadow governments are afoot in Scandal, an over-the-top political thriller about Olivia Pope, a whip-smart crisis management consultant who also happens to be having an affair with the president, whose election may have been rigged. Oh boy. There’s a lot going on in Scandal and its first two seasons are extremely bingeable before it becomes a parody of itself. Watch it: Foxtel Now

SOMETHING THRILLING

Das Boot: A spin-off of Wolfgang Petersen’s iconic 1981 film of the same name, this German TV series picks up some months after the original movie, this time in the French city of New Rochelle where a crew is setting off on a U-boat while on land, the Resistance movement is making a push. This well-composed and tense series stars Lizzy Caplan, Vicky Krieps, James D’Arcy, Vincent Kartheiser and Tom Wlaschiha. Watch it: SBS On Demand

Defending Jacob: Defending Jacob oozes star power with Chris Evans and Michelle Dockery as the leads and Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) as director across all eight episodes. Adapted from the bestseller by William Landay, this slow-burn and moody drama is set in a small community in Boston where the charismatic prosecutor finds himself in an untenable situation when his 14-year-old son is accused of murdering a classmate. Watch it: Apple TV+ from Friday, April 24

SOMETHING FUNNY

Community: Imaginative and oftentimes absurd, the antics at Greendale Community College recently hit Netflix so it’s winning over a new legion of fans who didn’t catch it the first time around. From epic paintball battles to explorations of the darkest timeline (which is this one, right?), Community’s willingness to genre-hop and try different things is one of the reasons why this series has achieved classic status. #sixseasonsandamovie, let’s make it happen. Watch it: Netflix/Stan/Amazon Prime/iview

Better Things: Star Pamela Adlon’s voice is strong in this black comedy, and it should be given that she co-created it and also writes and directs almost every episode. It also happens to be semibiographical, inspired by her own experiences in Hollywood as a working actor and single mother, trying to balance the impossible demands of work and parenting and the frustrations and rewards that come with both. Watch it: Foxtel Now

SOMETHING LONG

Boston Legal: Here is a spin-off that ended up outshining its parent show, The Practice, winning audiences with its crackling on-screen chemistry between James Spaders’ Alan Shore and William Shatner’s Denny Crane. It didn’t hurt that the cast also boasted Candice Bergen. Clocking in at 101 episodes, it’s a legal dramedy with sass. Alan Shore said everything we wish we could say, if only we had a Hollywood writer to make us sound as smart and smartarse as him. Watch it: iTunes/Google Play

Frasier: The laugh-track is off-putting but given that was the 1990s, understandable. With 264 episodes across 11 seasons, this clever comedy about the snobby Crane brothers still has some of the wittiest repartee in TV. Frasier and Niles’ expensive tastes and penchant for sherry is offset by their father Martin’s no bullsh*t philosophy while watching Niles pine for Daphne continues to amuse. Watch it: Stan/Foxtel Now

SOMETHING WITH THE KIDS

The Willoughbys: Boasting stunning animation and a star-studded voice cast including Will Forte, Jane Krakowski, Terry Crews, Maya Rudolph and Ricky Gervais, The Willoughbys is Netflix’s latest animated feature, a field it’s getting more serious about. The story follows the Willoughby kids who plot to be rid of their awful parents, before realising love is more complicated than that. Watch it: Netflix

Thalu: This live-action children’s adventure features a group of indigenous kids who must save their country from a mysterious force in the form of a dust cloud. To do so, they have to find eight magical stones and a special key that will unlock the power of Thalu, a place of great significance. The series was shot in the Pilbara and weaves throughout it the stories of the Roebourne communities and the Ngarluma culture. Watch it: SBS On Demand
