Prince Harry didn't tell his father Prince Charles he was about to severe ties with some of Britain's key tabloid publications, The Times in the UK reports, leaving the Prince of Wales and the Palace stunned.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who officially stepped down from their roles as senior royals at the beginning of April, sent a letter to The Sun, the Daily Express, the Daily Mirror and the Daily Mail, stating that they and their media team will no longer be working with them.
The British royals traditionally cooperate with media outlets in the UK via their press offices.
Harry and Meghan declared that they will have "no collaboration and zero engagements" with these outlets moving forward.
"We are writing to set a new media relations policy, specifically as it pertains to your organisation," the message begins.
The letter stipulates that while the couple believe the "free press is a cornerstone to any democracy," they also argue, "when power is enjoyed without responsibility, the trust we all place in this much needed industry is degraded."

Harry and Meghan then dissect the "real human cost" of tabloid journalism's impact on "every corner of society."
"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have watched people they know have their lives completely pulled apart for no good reason," the statement continues.
The Sussexes, who have been hounded by the press since the beginning of their relationship, criticised the four tabloid publications for their use of "salacious gossip" to boost advertising revenue.
A policy of "zero engagement" is expressed as the couple's plan moving forward, implying they will not respond to any inquiries from journalists, except when necessary through the couple's lawyers.
The Duke and Duchess also accuse the outlets of regularly running stories of a distorted, false and invasive nature.
The statement comes as Meghan prepares to go to court over the Mail on Sunday's decision to print a letter she sent to her estranged father.
A virtual hearing for the trial is scheduled to take place on Friday.
