Royal Family avoids sending birthday wishes to Meghan Markle - PerthNow

The Royal Family pointedly failed to publicly wish the Duchess of Sussex a happy birthday for the first time last night.

The glaring omission on their social media channels on Meghan’s 42nd birthday was seen by many as the most public sign yet of their bitter rift.

Royal aides said they marked the birthdays only of working members of the Royal Family on their official accounts.

However, this seemed at odds with posts wishing the duchess a happy birthday by Clarence House — King Charles and Queen Camilla’s former household — and the Prince and Princess of Wales’ Kensington Palace in previous years.

Royal watchers will doubtless view it as further evidence of the increasingly strained relationship between the Sussexes and senior royals following their increasingly vitriolic attacks on the family culminating in their bombshell Netflix series, which aired in December, and Harry’s bitter memoir published in January.

It is also Meghan’s first birthday since the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September. Meghan did not attend the King’s coronation in May, and Harry was seated away from senior members of the family.

On August 4 last year, Charles, Camilla, William, and Kate sent messages to Meghan on Twitter from their official accounts. William and Kate’s said: “Wishing a happy birthday to the Duchess of Sussex!” The message, posted at 9.01am British time, also featured a photo of Meghan in a white outfit and hat taken during her visit to the UK a few months earlier for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Charles and Camilla’s message, sent at 9.06am, said, “Happy Birthday to The Duchess of Sussex!” with a red balloon emoji.

Yesterday the first post on the Prince and Princess of Wales’ account on X, as Twitter is now called, was a message of congratulations to the makers of the documentary film Rhino Man, which has been shortlisted for an award. The couple are long-standing advocates of conservation.

This year neither Lilibet nor Archie — Meghan and Harry’s children — received birthday wishes from the royal Twitter accounts. Archie’s fourth birthday fell on the day of the King’s coronation.

The Mail understands that in the wake of the couple’s bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview in 2021, there were discussions at Buckingham Palace as to whether it was appropriate to continue to include the Sussexes and their children in their annual public acknowledgment, given their decision to step back as working royals.

Some aides felt it was a natural transition in light of their changed role as birthday wishes aren’t posted for other non-working royals such as Princess Anne’s children as well as the two young children of Prince Edward.

Others feared that it could be viewed as petty by supporters of the Sussexes, particularly the couple themselves. While there was no firm decision either way, the feeling was that it would need to be done at some point and any backlash “taken on the chin”.

It marks a change from Meghan’s birthday in 2019 when Clarence House sent warm wishes and photos of the duchess giggling with Charles and Camilla. The Clarence House account is no longer being updated since the death of the Queen.

The late Queen also celebrated, with her Twitter account posting a picture of Meghan with Harry.

Even after Harry and Meghan stepped away from life as working royals in 2020 and moved to America, the family sent wishes for Meghan’s 40th birthday in 2021.

On Wednesday, Meghan, wearing a £188 hooped dress by Posse, and Harry, 38, enjoyed a pre-birthday dinner at the fashionable Italian restaurant Tre Lune in Montecito.

Last night Kensington Palace did not respond to requests for comment.
