Last year, exhibitors held the first National Cinema Day – a one-day event with deeply discounted tickets designed to try and get people back out to cinemas during the end of the Northern Hemisphere summer, a traditionally rather quiet time at the movies.
Even though there was very little out at the time to see last year, the initiative brought out a record number of people, with an estimated 8.1 million moviegoers attending their local multiplex in the United States to purchase tickets for any format screen for just $3.
It was the highest-attended day of the year for theaters up to that point and, even with the deeply discounted admissions, the offset of all the extra foot traffic coming in saw a bump of 9% in revenue compared to the same day in 2021.
Now they’re doing it again. A posting on Reddit on Saturday from an apparent Cinemark employee teased that this year’s event will take place this coming Sunday August 27th with at least that chain “offering $4 tickets and $1 off concessions”. They added the official details will be announced later today (Monday).
Things got official via a press release from Australian local distributors Reading Cinemas over at Film Ink magazine confirming the event will also be taking place in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, amongst other countries. Locations and prices vary from country to country.
Since then, the official site for the event has gone live at NationalCinemaDay.org. Major U.S. theater chains like AMC and Dolby Cinema are participating in the event with tickets costing no more than $4, even for premium seating.
One big change this year is that there is no shortage of product out in cinemas for people to attend with the wide release of “Gran Turismo” on Friday, along with the still-going “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” “Blue Beetle,” “Strays,” “Meg 2: The Trench,” “Sound of Freedom,” “Last Voyage of the Demeter,” and “Haunted Mansion” among others.
