Mashd N Kutcher band member Matt Minor’s shock cancer diagnosis - PerthNow

One half of Aussie band Mashd N Kutcher has announced some devastating news to the electronic duo’s fans.

Matt Minor, who makes up the Brisbane-based act with Adam Morris, took to social media to tell his followers he has been diagnosed with a type of cancer called multiple myeloma.

Myeloma is a type of blood cancer that develops from plasma cells in the bone marrow.

The 33-year-old said the news came as a shock because he had no issues with his health prior to the diagnosis.

“This was unexpected as I was otherwise healthy, however it has spread throughout my body causing multiple breaks in my arms ribs and more,” his social media post said.

“Over the immediate months, we will hit this from every angle with chemotherapy and extensive treatment ahead.”

“In summary, the road ahead is challenging but I’m very fortunate to have an amazing support network of family, close friends and colleagues, right now I’m physically weak but mentally strong, and I’ll be giving this everything I’ve got.”

Mashd N Kutcher, which is a play on the name of actor Ashton Kutcher, is best known for songs Do It Now and My Sunshine and was created by Minor in 2012 with “the goal of making music and showcasing talented bandmates through the live shows”.

Their song Get on the Beers, inspired by VIC Premier Dan Andrews, placed 12th on the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2020.

The dance remix went viral last year after Andrews announced that pubs would be closed as part of COVID-19 restrictions, warning Victorians that it was “not appropriate” to have friends at home to “get on the beers”.

Fortunately, for the band’s fans, Minor said touring and shows would continue without him.

“For now I’ll be absent from social media and touring, however my energy and focus will be writing and producing the records, plus curating and programming the music and visuals for the live shows, which the talented collective of MNK members will perform as they always have,” he said.

Later this month, MNK will head to Asia for some headline shows before coming home to Australia in September with dates to be announced soon.

Minor said he will be creating more music in the meantime.

“If you enjoyed Sunshine or On My Mind you’ll love the next releases,” he foreshadowed.

Hundreds of fans immediately wrapped their arms around the musician with love and support.

“All the best recovering legend, love some of those tunes,” one fan said.

Another said: “Oh I am so sorry to hear this, my father in law was diagnosed with this back in 2008 they got him into some trials and he went into complete remission. Wishing you the very best of luck with the battle you have ahead.”

Fellow bands also wished him all the best with a speedy recovery.

“Sorry to hear legend best wishes,” Slice N Dice said.

Paralympian and 2022 Australian of the Year Dylan Alcott sent “big love” and comedian Alright Hey said: “You’re gonna kick cancers butt, darl!”

MNK has about 1.3 million followers on Facebook and 167,000 fans on Instagram.
