Music world in mourning following death of legendary singer Tony Bennett - Sky News Australia

Legendary American jazz and pop singer Tony Bennett has died aged 96 after battling Alzheimer's disease for seven years.

Tony Bennett's Twitter account announced "Tony left us today" but revealed he had just been singing at his piano "the other day" and the last song he played was his first number one hit, 'Because of You'.

Tributes are flowing in thick and fast for an icon who was respected all across the music industry after amassing an incredible career of more than 70 years.

Former president Barack Obama remembered the singer who performed at his 2008 inauguration.

"Tony Bennett was an iconic songwriter and entertainer who charmed generations of fans. He was also a good man—Michelle and I will always be honored that he performed at my inauguration. We're thinking of his wife Susan, his kids, and everyone who is missing him today," the 44th president tweeted.

Giants of the music industry such as Billy Joel, Ozzy Osbourne, Nile Rodgers, Smokey Robinson, Keith Urban and Keith Richards joined a chorus of artists praising the longevity and lasting legacy of Bennett.

Gene Simmons, bass player for rock band KISS said "we lost an icon of icons" as he shared a tribute to Twitter.

"Kind, considerate and as Sinatra was quoted as saying, the best singer of them all. Rest In Peace, Tony Bennett," he said.

Pop star Mariah Carey shared pictures of herself with Bennett from when they performed together as she paid her respects.

"Rest in Peace Tony Bennett. It was such an honor to work with one of the world's most beloved, respected and legendary singers of the past century. We will miss you," she said.

Actor Rob Schneider said "Heaven just got the best swooner ever" while posting a video of Bennett performing at the age of 94.

Fans have also paid tribute to the performer, laying flowers at his statue at the Fairmont Hotel on Tony Bennett Way, San Francisco.

Some of the New Yorker's biggest hits included 'I Left My Heart in San Francisco', 'Rags to Riches' and 'Fly Me To The Moon'.

The singer released his first studio album in 1952 before going on to record another 60 which included eight collaboration albums and three Christmas albums. He also released 11 live records.

He collected 20 grammy awards between 1963 and 2022 and also received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Videos have also been swirling, reflecting on Bennett's personal and artistic relationship with Lady Gaga after they became an unlikely pair, releasing their first album together in 2014.

His final album was 2021's Love for Sale, another collaboration with the Bad Romance singer.

Gaga had credited Bennett with "saving" her after losing her desire to sing due to pressures of the music industry.

Bennett's family told the world the singer had been battling Alzheimer's in 2021 since his official diagnosis in 2016. He continued to perform up until 2021 as he defied his condition.

He leaves behind his four children and his wife and long-time partner Susan Crow.
