Zayn Malik opens up about One Direction departure and stage anxiety during his first interview in years - ABC News

For the first time in six years, Zayn Malik has done a public interview.

The former One Direction star sat down with Alex Cooper, the host of Call Her Daddy, one of Spotify's most-streamed podcasts.

Speaking about his journey from his boy band days all the way through to fatherhood, Malik revealed the "politics" within One Direction and his anxiety issues performing on stage.

These were the biggest moments Malik revealed.

'Mysterious' persona wasn't true to him

Halfway through the interview, Cooper asks Malik what "persona" he thought he was given in the band.

"They just said, 'Oh yeah, you can be the mysterious one'," he said.

"That wasn't necessarily my personality type.

"I know that a lot of people have high energy personalities and it's just not the way I am."

Malik went on to say the act of assigning one particular personality trait to each band member was "a marketing scheme".

Band members 'got sick of each other'

Malik also revealed there were "underlying issues" in the band.

"Within our friendships, too," he said.

"We've been together every day for five years and we got sick of each other.

"We were close, we done crazy things with each other that nobody else in the world will ever understand, or have them experiences that we've shared together."

Now at 30 years old, the singer said he can look back at the memories and experiences they shared in a "much fonder light".

'I wanted to be the first to go'

The singer admitted he "selfishly" wanted to be the first member to launch a solo career.

"There was a lot of politics going on," he said.

"Certain people were doing certain things [and] certain people didn't want to sign contracts, so I knew something was happening so I just got ahead of the curve.

"I selfishly wanted to be the first person to make their own record.

"I'm passive but when it comes to my music and my business, I'm serious about it and I'm competitive. I wanted to be the first to go and do my own thing."

After formally announcing he was leaving the group in March 2015, Malik moved to London, saying he was "on a mission" to make his own music.

"It's a very different experience standing by yourself on stage," he said.

He described performing songs by himself instead of splitting verses between band members as "a whole different workload".

"I just kinda had to make an adjustment," he said.

"I started practising a lot more, singing a lot more [and] making sure I could sing [an entire song] for three minutes."

Fatherhood gave him a new perspective on anxiety

In 2016, Malik cancelled a concert in Dubai, saying his anxiety mean he wasn't confident enough to perform a major solo show. Here's what he said at the time:

"I have been working over the last three months to overcome my extreme anxiety around major live solo performances [and] I feel I am making progress.

"But I have today acknowledged that I do not feel sufficiently confident to move forward with the planned show in Dubai in October . . . I am truly sorry to disappoint you."

He spoke about his anxiety with Cooper.

"Anxiety for me, I've learnt is a feeling that now has a word," he said.

"And I feel like, for generations, human beings have felt it and not really been able to put their finger on what it is... but we overcome it."

He said becoming a father changed his perspective and made him feel like he "had to step up".

"Since I've had my daughter ... the main thing in my mind is trying to be a good example for her," he said.

"That's why I'm even doing this interview.

"I used to get a lot of anxiety around having a conversation like this.

"I want her to look at me and be like, 'Yo, my dad's doing this! He's the man, he's cool'.

"That's helped me a lot."

Cooper flags 'family issues'

In 2021, Malik was accused of harassing his then partner Gigi Hadid and her mother during a violent argument at the family’s home outside Philadelphia in September the same year.

He was accused of grabbing Yolanda Hadid and shoving her against a dresser, according to court documents.

Malik denied the allegation in a statement posted to his social media.

However, he filed a "no contest" plea to four harassment charges and was put on 360 days of probation.

He was also ordered to complete an anger management class and a domestic violence program.

Cooper didn't directly reference the 2021 allegations but instead, raised the subject of Malik's "family issues".

"Reading the headlines, I wanted to hear from you obviously," Cooper said.

"You have said you have 50 per cent custody.

"So anything that we've all read online, well, if that was true, then that would have affected that," she said.

"Unless you can correct me, you don't have to have people with you while you're with your daughter and like visitation rights."

Malik shook his head and said multiple "no's" in response.

"I'm super full on and like, hands on with my child every chance I can be," he told Cooper.

"Since I've had my daughter, the main thing in my mind is trying to be a good example for her," he said.

Co-parenting 'going well'

When Cooper asked how his co-parenting relationship with Gigi Hadid was going, Malik said: "Co-parenting is good."

"We have a really good relationship for Khai. She's the main importance."

"I have her 50 per cent of the time, so that time I have with her is so important because I feel like she's growing up so fast," he said.

Malik said when he's with his daughter, he doesn't work, adding that he spends a "full day" doing any activity she wants to do, "like painting, playing with Play-Doh, going to a theme park or zoo".
