'We are so grateful': Harry and Meghan's heartfelt message to Sir Elton John ahead of final US concert - 9Honey

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared a video message for Sir Elton John's multi-year 'Yellow Brick Road' farewell tour.

The singer performed his final US concert at Dodger Stadium in California overnight, with the performance attended by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Meghan, 41, began the message by saying: "We just wanted to say congratulations and that we are just so proud of you. We are so grateful that we were able to see you on your farewell tour also."

Harry, 38, continued: "Thank you for entertaining everybody for so many decades. Thank you for being the friend that you were to my mum. Thank you for being our friend and thank you for being [a friend] to our kids and thank you for entertaining people right around the world."

Harry ended the message by saying: "Even though this is officially your retirement, this will not be your last gig, we know that, but we love you, and congratulations on an incredible career."

Sir Elton will bring his farewell tour to Australia in January 2023 including in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.

The singer was a longtime friend of the late Princess Diana, with the pair forging a firm friendship following their first meeting in 1981.

They famously fell out a year before her death, reuniting for mutual friend Gianni Versace's funeral in July 1997, just two months before Diana's own funeral in September.

Sir Elton fought back tears as he performed an adapted version of his hit single 'Candle In The Wind' at the royal's service. The singer attended the weddings of both of Diana's sons, performing at the lunchtime reception of Harry and Meghan's wedding in 2018.

The next year he spoke out in defence of the couple's use of private jets for a holiday in France.

"I am deeply distressed by today's distorted and malicious account in the press surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's private stay at my home in Nice last week," he wrote on Instagram at the time.

"Prince Harry's Mother, Diana Princess of Wales was one of my dearest friends. I feel a profound sense of obligation to protect Harry and his family from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana's untimely death," he continued.

"After a hectic year continuing their hard work and dedication to charity, David and I wanted the young family to have a private holiday inside the safety and tranquillity of our home. To maintain a high level of much-needed protection, we provided them with a private jet."

Sir Elton continued: "To support Prince Harry's commitment to the environment, we ensured their flight was carbon neutral, by making the appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint."

He ended the post by saying: "I highly respect and applaud both Harry and Meghan's commitment to charity and I'm calling on the press to cease these relentless and untrue assassinations on their character that are spuriously crafted on an almost daily basis."

Sir Elton shared a message on the 25 year anniversary of Princess Diana's death, sharing a photo taken with with the late royal along with the caption: "You will always be missed."
