Prince Philip effectively washed his hands of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan after their decision to quit royal life, according to a new biography.
The Duke of Edinburgh was initially fond of Meghan and supported her entry into the royal family, royal writer Ingrid Seward writes in ‘Prince Philip revealed.’ But after the couple’s decision to leave the Firm, as the family calls itself he compared Meghan with Wallis Simpson, the American divorcee who triggered the abdication crisis in 1936.
The 99-year-old was particularly hurt when the couple ignored his advice on how Meghan could adjust to royal life and “deeply upset” at the way they treated Queen Elizabeth, making their announcement that they were quitting royal life before consulting with her.

According to extracts published in Vanity Fair magazine, the Queen was told of the couple’s decision just 10 minutes before they published it on their website Sussex Royal.
“She was not amused. As Philip was in residence, he was also aware of the announcement and its implications,” Seward writes in the first biography of Prince Philip in more than 30 years.
Despite harbouring doubts about Harry’s marriage to the American divorcee, Prince Philip made an effort to attend their wedding in 2018 although he was recovering from a hip operation.
But he now sees Harry’s wife as a polarising force and is furious with his grandson for effectively abdicating his royal duties, as Queen Elizabeth’s uncle did in 1936.
“For Philip, whose entire existence has been based on a devotion to doing his duty, it appeared that his grandson had abdicated his for the sake of his marriage to an American divorcee in much the same way as Edward VIII gave up his crown to marry Wallis Simpson in 1936,” Seward writes.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, the respected royal writer said such was Philip’s anger at the couple’s decision, he refused to be part of the so-called ‘Sandringham Summit,’ the showdown between Harry, the Queen and Princes Charles and William as they tried to iron out a solution to ‘Megxit’.
“Philip simply cannot understand how Harry has behaved the way he has done. His grandson’s behaviour is completely alien to him so not unnaturally the relationship has suffered,” she said. “Don’t forget this is a man about to turn 100 who has devoted 68 years of his adult life to supporting the monarchy, and this has been a great shock. The Queen would not want him to worry at his age, but Philip’s absence from the Sandringham Summit spoke volumes. The fact that he was driven away from the big house at Sandringham before everyone even arrived signalled he didn’t want to be part of it.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed they are permanently stepping down as working Royals.
Harry is reportedly in self isolation in California in case he has dash back to the UK to see Prince Philip, who is currently in hospital after feeling ill last week. The Mail on Sunday reported that Harry called the Queen to ask about his grandfather’s condition and asked her for regular updates.
On Saturday Prince Charles travelled from Highgrove to visit his father, obtaining a special clearance to enter the King Edward VII hospital in London, which is off limits to visitors because of the national coronavirus lockdown.
Prince William has told reporters Prince Philip was “OK” after spending a sixth night in hospital for “observation and rest”.
During a visit to a COVID-19 vaccination centre in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, on Monday, Prince William winked when asked about Philip’s condition and replied: “Yes, he’s OK. They’re keeping an eye on him.”
The rift between Harry and Meghan and the Royals grew on Friday as the Sussexes confirmed they would not be returning to royal duties and released a statement that appeared to lecture the Queen on “service.”
Seward told Vanity Fair: “Philip has always been very protective of the Queen so if anyone upsets her, they upset him too. His mantra is the monarchy comes first, second, and third.
“Philip welcomed Meghan at the beginning, he knows what it’s like to be an outsider, and so he’s always very supportive of people marrying into the family.
“He quite liked Meghan at first, but their actions have left a bad taste and as a consequence the relationship with Harry has suffered.”
