What is the Snyder Cut? Can I watch it on HBO Max in Australia? Here's your shortcut guide - ABC News

One of the internet's longest-running jokes is about to become a real thing — with director Zack Snyder announcing he has signed a deal with HBO to release a director's cut of 2017 superhero film Justice League.

Here's your shortcut guide to how the Snyder Cut became a real thing.

What is the Snyder Cut?

When The Avengers (the OG most ambitious crossover event in history) released in 2012 and pulled in an eye-watering $1.5 billion for Disney and Marvel, DC and Warner Bros decided they wanted their own version.

In 2017, after a string of pretty great (Wonder Woman) to pretty bad (Suicide Squad) lead-up films, we got that version — Justice League.

Directed by Zack Snyder, the film paired up DC comics' biggest stars in a film that was supposed to be the end of the beginning of a juggernaut that would rival Disney and Marvel for the next decade.

Oh yeah. That movie was bad, right?

Terrible. It's sitting at 40% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The plot was a mess. The villain was undercooked. They tried to remove Henry Cavill's moustache with CGI when they had to get him back in for reshoots (and creeped everyone out instead)

Zack Snyder was also forced to step away from the film in its final stages because of a family tragedy and hand the directing gig over to Avengers' director Joss Whedon.

Warner Bros reportedly lost up to $US100 million ($154 million).

And we're yet to see another Justice League movie.

So why did it become a whole *thing*?

Because the success of the DC cinematic universe is a big deal to a whole lot of people. Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman have legacies that stretch well beyond these films.

Marvel fans got their wildly successful cinematic adaptions, why shouldn't the DC fans?

Plus, the circumstances that led Snyder to step away from the film left tantalising "what if" questions for the die-hards:

  • What if Snyder could have finished his movie?
  • What if Snyder had been the one to edit it?
  • What if the studio hadn't reportedly meddled and let him tell the story he wanted to?

Rumours spread that a version of the film that Snyder had worked on was locked away, and passionate fans sparked the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut social media campaign.

When the stars of the film got on board, it blew up.

In the years since, it became a meme for a bunch of fandoms. Was that book/TV show/comic/movie of that thing you love bad? Demand a #SnyderCut of it.

Huh. Will it be a good movie now?

Who knows?!

Fans believe nuggets of a masterpiece lie within Justice League, and this director's cut will deliver it.

And it wouldn't be the strangest thing for a director's cut to drastically improve a film (looking at you Blade Runner and Lord of the Rings).

But it's not coming out until 2021, and it's reportedly going to cost another $US20 million ($30 million).

The Hollywood Reporter claims it'll be either a four-hour epic or cut into six "TV-style chapters" when it's eventually released.

Where can I watch it?

The Snyder Cut of Justice League is the latest splashy exclusive that's been announced for HBO Max, the premium cable TV giant's attempt to build up a Netflix competitor.

But in Australia, it's just been announced that Foxtel has picked up the rights to all HBO content, and it'll form the basis of its new streaming app Foxtel Binge.

HBO Max launches in the US on May 27, and Foxtel Binge releases in Australia on May 25.
