MasterChef Australia favourite Reynold Poernomo apologises for homophobic comments made in 2014 - PerthNow

Popular MasterChef Australia contestant Reynold Poernomo has apologised after being exposed as a homophobe in a gay hate scandal.

Poernomo, a fan favourite, reportedly made comments on a body building website that were unearthed this afternoon, where he wrote that all gay people should be “captured” and “put on a remote island”.

The bizarre and hateful rant was made in 2014 just months before he first appeared on the seventh season of the Network Ten cooking show where he finished fourth.

Poernomo has been unveiled as the man behind the username reyreyy on the site bodybuilding.com, who responded to a thread about the first gay couple to feature on the Disney channel.

“I wish the world made a united decision where they will capture all gay people and put them on a remote island full of gays, that way straight ppl (people) will be happy and the freaks can go on and f... themselves,” Poernomo wrote.

The then 20-year-old also added fuel to the fire when he chimed in on a forum thread that posed the question, ‘is homosexuality a mental illness?’

“Yes, end of thread,” he said.

The Indonesian-born Sydney-based MasterChef contestant, known as the Dessert King by fans, has been a fan favourite to take out the current season of MasterChef Australia: Back to Win but his comments are sure to shock producers and his fellow contestants along with the family friendly audience.

Poernomo has been competing alongside openly gay and lesbian contestants in this year’s season— including Perth’s Brendan Pang.

In a statement published in reaction to the unearthing of his internet footprint, Poernomo, now 26, said he was sorry.

“I would like to offer my sincere and deepest apologies for the comments that I made in 2014. I am ashamed of these comments and I regret them immensely,” he said.

“At the time these comments were made, I was a very immature, close-minded and insular 20-year-old. I have grown and matured a lot in the last six years. I am not the person I was back then.

“I have many friends and colleagues that are part of the LGBTQI+ community. I wholeheartedly support them and care deeply for them. I am truly sorry and apologise for any offence or hurt I caused.”

It’s not the first scandal to rock the latest season of MasterChef, after fellow contestant Ben Ungermann was kicked off the show when he was arrested in relation to sexual assault allegations.

The 36-year-old was charged with two counts of sexual assault allegedly committed against a 16 year old girl while in Melbourne in February.

And before the newest season even began veteran judges George Calombaris, Matt Preston and Gary Mehigan were sensationally dumped by the network in favour of Andy Allen, Melissa Leong and Jock Zonfrillo.
