Karl Stefanovic has called Piers Morgan "a lightweight" in a cheeky dig over his gripe with the Australian cricket team and the Ashes.

The outspoken British media personality accused the Aussies of trashing the spirit of sportsmanship when England's Jonny Bairstow was stumped by Australia's Alex Carey earlier this week.

Now everyone from the Australian and UK prime ministers to sporting and media greats in both countries have weighed in on which team was in the wrong.

But Morgan is so confident England will bounce back from the on-the-green chaos, he had some controversial words for Karl when the pair spoke overnight.

"I spoke to Piers Morgan last night and he said he will come on our show when England win the series 3-2," the Today host said.

"Are you serious?" Brooke responded.

"He's absolutely dreaming."

Sports presenter, Alex Cullen said Morgan needed his head read over such a remark.

"He's such a lightweight," Karl added.

"I can't believe it, what a loser."

England has its back against the wall tonight when they take on Australia for the third Ashes test in Leeds tonight.

If Australia take out tonight's match, it will secure their first Ashes series win in England in 22 years.

But the Aussies have been warned they will face a hostile British crowd after the fallout from Bristow being stumped.
