Real reason why Harry and Meghan waited until now to use royal titles for Archie and Lilibet - Sky News Australia

Meghan and Harry have used the titles prince and princess for their children Archie and Lilibet publicly for the first time.

A spokesperson for the Sussexes released a statement to People on Wednesday, revealing the "Princess" title was used for Lilibet’s christening in California on Friday.

Although the children were officially granted the titles when King Charles III ascended the throne in September, it is the first time they have been used publicly. 

But many have questioned why the Sussexes had waited so long to use the royal titles, with Buckingham Palace updating its website only now.  

Speaking to Sky News Australia's Peta Credlin on Thursday, TalkTV Royal Editor Sarah Hewson confirmed discussions about the titles did take place following Queen Elizabeth's II funeral, but the Sussexes' never made it clear whether or not they would use them.

According to a Letters Patent issued by King George V in 1917, Archie and Lilibet had the right to the titles following the monarch's death on September 8.

The protocols state that the children and grandchildren of a monarch are automatically gifted the title HRH, as well as prince or princess.

“It wasn’t clear if they would use them or not since Harry and Meghan have left the family as working royals and headed to the States," Ms Hewson said. 

“We understand discussions took place after the Queen’s funeral and it has been agreed that they will be known formally as prince and princess - although Harry and Meghan won’t be using it in everyday life.”

When Credlin asked if the Sussexes' decision to adopt the titles was a financial move, Ms Hewson said the titles did provide an incentive for the couple.

“You wouldn’t be wrong if you look at this and think about the branding," she said. 

"When they said they wanted to distance themselves from the family they wanted to have a private life, when Archie was born I remember vividly being told they wanted him to be Master Archie, now he is Prince and Lilibet is Princess."
